The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records. (WHERE DO I CHANGE THIS?!)

If your last year's return was delayed for some reason, IRS may not have the right AGI amount in their system to match your return. In my case, I had to enter 0 in the AGI field to get IRS to accept my tax return.

The error that they throw back is more general though. They do not tell you if it was the AGI or if it was the PIN that was incorrect. PIN and AGI are the way they correlate your current tax return to your previous tax return (to verify your identity). If you don't remember receiving any PIN, then it is the AGI that you should fix.

To add to the confusion, there is another PIN that Turbotax asks you to fill in order to "sign" your return. That's a totally different PIN and is not related to the PIN IRS is complaining about.

Turbotax support will NOT help you in this case. They threw random and incorrect advice to me. Here is a resource that may help - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/rejections/help/what-if-i-entered-the-correct-agi-and-i-m-still-ge...

The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records. (WHERE DO I CHANGE THIS?!)

Your not going crazy, me neither (I hope). I have 3 AGI's, my original one, my amended tax return one and the AGI recalculated by the IRS, which to use? Between this and the 5 digit pin #  which has multiple directions (create a new one or use the 2019 pin#s). I've sent it in 3 times and all three have been rejected.  Just sent in #4 and waiting for an answer.  At least I've got untill 4/15 to get it in correctly.

Changing my 2019 AGI to 0 (zero) did the trick for me too!  Thanks.

Thanks for the "expert" answer, but there is no explanation of HOW to verify your identity for e-filing using only last years AGI. TurboTax software is demanding 5 digit pin numbers also, there is no choice.  So I input last years AGI AND 5 new 5-digit pins for me and my wife, but the result is REJECTION, code IND-031-04.  Very disappointing, very irritating.  I have looked at many "expert" answers and they contradict each other.  Get it together Turbo Tax.

This seems like an error in your software.  There should be the ability to enter the 6 digit pin the IRS gives, within your software.  I really would like a refund for the software.  How do I make that happen?

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info
  • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

Thanks for the info about entering 0 in place of AGI, this helped me! I had mailed my taxes last year, so I guess some glitch in the software to correctly identify AGI.

The IRS 6 digit IP PIN and the 5 digit PIN are different things.

What is the difference between the Self-Select PIN and the IP PIN?

If you have a 6 digit PIN from the IRS, this is used to verify your identity if you have been a victim identity theft in the past.

What is the 6-digit IP PIN?

You can enter your 6-digit IP PIN in the federal section of the program.

  1. Select Your uncommon tax situations
  2. Select Other Return Info
  3. Select Identity Protection PIN
  4. Proceed to follow the steps to enter your information from the IRS

Similarly, we were notified the IRS rejected our return with "IND-031-04" when we e-filed with TurboTax.  When we restarted TurnoTax, the stated our AGI amount did not match the amount in our 2019 return... But we had entered the correct amount.

Then, following a suggestion by another user in this forum we substituted $0 for the correct amount of our 2019 AGI and it worked! The 2020 return was accepted.

(This makes no sense and it would be nice to get an explanation. It this yet another major glitch in TurboTax?)

This is not a glitch in TurboTax.  It is what the IRS tells us to do.

"E-filing your 2020 tax return: To e-file you will need to enter your AGI from your tax year 2019 tax return.  If your 2019 return has not yet been processed, you may enter $ 0 (zero) as your prior year Adjusted Gross Income. If you used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool last year to register for an Economic Impact Payment, enter “$1” as your prior year AGI."

IRS rejected my efile last year for an incorrect PIN. I do not know what my PIN is. Why is this happening?

@wwmelvin

IDENTITY PIN

Per the  IRS:

Taxpayers who previously have been issued an Identity Protection PIN but lost it, must use the Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve their numbers. Taxpayers who have an IP PIN need to provide it when they file their return.

Where do I find my AGI?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/01/25947

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/00/270...

Your 2019 tax return shows your 2019 Adjusted Gross Income  (AGI)  If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

Form 1040        line 8b

If you are using the same TT account that you used last year, you should also be able to find this number in your Tax Home for 2019

If entering the amount from your 2019 tax return does not work, then try entering “0” instead.  If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

You can get a free transcript of your past return from the IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Note: If you filed late or amended your return, your correct 2019 AGI may not be in the system.

I opened an IRS account and verified AGI from 2019 and it still rejected. I've never had this issue before this year and have used Turbo for over 12 years and religiously keep a pin.   Mailing the return in for a refund is not acceptable!  Why would I keep using a product that doesn't work?
