If you filed a married joint return in 2020, then you both use the same total AGI from your 2020 Form 1040, Line 11.
No, you do not divide it or use her W-2.
Is the rejection error code for the secondary taxpayer on the return-- i.e., is it IND-032-04?
Are you the primary taxpayer listed on the return and Mary the second taxpayer on the return? If it's not accepting the actual 2020 AGI for your spouse, then try using an AGI of 0 (zero) for the spouse.
NOTE: Be sure you are using the AGI from an original 2020 return--not an amended one, if applicable.
If you are filing a joint return your AGI and Mary's will be the same. When you are asked for your AGi and Mary's AGI enter the same amount for each of you. Just to verify your 2020 AGI is on Form 1040 Line 11. If you have verified your AGI's and are still having problems with your return being rejected reply to this post for additional assistance.
I believe the solution has been found, or at least it worked for me on a different tax app and will probably work on TurboTax, too, and the problem was not the five digit PIN.
As we all know, when filing jointly, the app does not ask for our Prior Year AGI individually. In a joint return, we have one Prior Year AGI and that's the way it's entered. Apparently, the problem is a glitch in the app for joint filers, probably in the IRS system, that recognizes the Prior Year AGI as belonging to the tax payers but not the spouse. Here is the solution that worked in FreeTaxUSA and will probably work in TurboTax:
1. Go to the page that asks for your Prior Year AGI.
2. When asked if you filed a 2020 tax return, answer yes.
3. Even if you filed jointly in the past, click on the option that "Only the taxpayer filed a return".
4. On the Prior Year AGI or PIN page answer YES, that you have access to the primary taxpayers AGI.
5. On the Prior Year AGI page, enter the correct amount of your joint return's Prior Year AGI as if it's for the primary taxpayer only. This will make the app assume that the spouse's Prior Year AGI is 0.
6. Continue and ignore any alerts and fill out the rest of the pages until you can press the Send Tax Return button.
My 2020 tax returns were rejected due to the IRS not having the correct AGI in their system when I used Turbo Tax to file. Again for 2021 taxes I used turbo taxes to file and again the IRS does not have my AGI.
After two years, there is no longer a reason to use Turbo Tax again to file if I cannot file electronically through them. Next year I suggest trying a different company.
If you are unable to file as they do not have an AGI on file, you can enter 0 as your AGI to allow you to file the return. @CCWBA
For 2021 return, I changed AGI to 0 instead of the actual AGI TurboTax had from 2020, and the return was accepted, after it was rejected with the actual AGI. It was not a filing PIN issue as I had thought. That means it's an IRS issue instead of TurboTax. Thanks to those who suggested this.
Glad to hear that you were able to file successfully - thanks for the update @VictoryKing.
After I GET last years, AGI, what do I do with it on this year's return to get IRS to accept my electronic filing?
sorry but the info in the link you provided does not resolve the problem in all cases. You need to look into it further to determine why.
But WHERE do you enter the AGI on the 2021 TurboTax software (Mac, downloaded)? I imported last years info into this year's software, and I can't find where to enter last year's AGI into this year's software!!!
Please tell me where you entered the zero into the 2021 TurboTax software!!! I imported last year's info into this year's software and can't find WHERE to change the API to a zero!!!
