@dmathes01 If you already received half of your CTC between July and December---you get the other half when you get your 2021 refund. That "other half" is on line 28. Start at line 28 and follow the math down to the refund on line 35a.

I give up!! It's clearly say on line 19 to put here and on line 28 like last year!!! Turbo tax did that last year on my taxes! It's on lines 19 and 28 last year but not this year! It's the same tax credit! Like you said it's on several lines but the software is only putting it on one line which is 28 which is wrong
So the IRS is also wrong even though they clearly indicate that the 2021 child tax credit is a Refundable credit -
Last year for 2020 line 28 was the Additional Tax Credit. That was in addition to line 19. It was not for the same thing or amount. Line 19 was not the total credit. The remaining amount was on line 28. Add 19 & 28 together. That was the total credit you got last year. This year the whole total credit amount is only on line 28. It still works out the same (or better) even though it's not split out on 19 & 28.
This just doesn't make sense I'm getting like $2000 back this year! Last year I got $8000 and I made the same amount of money I did last year! So it's not the same or better it's worse, as y'all tell by all the people posting the same problem!
You got $8000 back last year. This year you are getting less back as a refund with your tax return---but you are trying to forget that you got payments between July and December----how much did you receive during those six months? You got a big chunk of your "refund" in advance.
I am having the same issue as everyone else on here and I think I found a clue to the issue or misunderstanding. Look on line 24 of your 1040 and compare it to line 24 of last year's tax return. For the past 3 years, my line 24 shows $0 total tax. I have 4 kids and make well under the threshold for the CTC, and I always get a refund. This year, after receiving the 6 advanced CTC payments, and thinking the other half would now be claimed on this tax return, now line 24 is populated with almost the amount of my advance CTC payments. Not sure if that how it is supposed to be, but my, and many others understanding is that this refund was fully refundable, and therefore the "other half" should show up in the refund. My line 28 does show the correct amount of the "other half" of the CTC, but it is not reflected in my refund. Help! And thank you.
I’m having same issue I should be receiving another 3300 but federal return is far below and I’ve never owed significant to fed that this would make since for the many years we’ve done our taxes I will look into the line to further investigate but I am also stalled due to this
@tblaze27 As shown on the Form 1040 the amount from Line 28 is included in the amount on Line 32. Line 32 is included in the amount on Line 33 Total Payments.
Line 34 is your tax refund. The amount on Line 34 is Line 33 minus Line 24. Therefor the amount from Line 28 is included in the tax refund.
THank you. What I'm trying to figure out, and a lot of other people, is why does it appear the CTC populated line 24, which ultimately reduces a refund? The new CTC was supposed to be fully refundable, and non-taxable. I realize I may have to talk to a CPA but no one so far has been able to help with that question. Thanks for your assistance

Why do you think the 2021 child tax credit is populated on the Form 1040 Line 24? There is nothing entered on Line 19 concerning the 2021 child tax credit.
Comparing this years to last years, it shows on line 16 that my tax is $5851, just shy of the missing 6k. Again, every year for the past 5 years line 16 on my 1040 is $0. The only thing that changed was the new CTC. The new CTC was supposed to be fully refundable, non-taxable. But it appears from line 16 that is not the case. Why would my tax go from 0 to $5851? Anyone?

Line 16 on the Form 1040 is the tax on your taxable income shown on Line 15. It has nothing to do with the CTC or any other credit.
For tax year 2021 the child tax credit is fully refundable and is entered on Form 1040 Line 28.
I am having the same problem with turbo tax and the child tax credit. The letter I received says I got the $1500 for my one dependent and does not give me the other $1500 I am eligible for. I do not think I will be filing with turbo tax anymore.

The other $1,500 is on your federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 28. That amount is included in your federal tax refund or it has reduced the amount of federal taxes owed. It will be entered on the Form 1040 Line 28 regardless of which tax preparation software you use.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
Exactly the same issue. Also 3 kids, but one is under 6, so my credit should be 9600. When I subtract out the 4800 I received in advanced, it's counting that as money I owe. Basically double subtracting the 4800. Same issue on H&R block. I've been with intuit/turbo for a long time and don't want to switch, but they need to fix this.
