Hi, I have the same issue. My token number is 1113085
Hello,
I am having the same issue. I filed my non-resident state return first (CT) and when I try to finish my resident state return (NY) I am getting a message saying the IT-112-R (CT): Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state."
My token number is 1113864
token number is: 1119654
Same issue Token 1121110
Thank you
New York does not allow you to claim a credit for more tax than was actually paid to the other state.
@yfang05 A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $2,179 for tax paid to Massachusetts. TurboTax computes your MA tax liability as $2,069.
You also started but did not make any entries for education interest and student loan interest. If you had paid qualified education expenses or student loan interest you can go back to Deductions & Credits and add those in for an additional tax break.

@taylora116 A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $4,863 for tax paid to Connecticut. TurboTax computes your MA tax liability as $4,860.
***
@ckj134 A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $1,401 for tax paid to New Jersey. TurboTax computes your NJ tax liability as $1,395.
Your return is also showing an error for a 1099-MISC. You can delete this 1099-MISC if the amount is only $0.01. TurboTax rounds to whole dollars so a $0.01 entry would be $0 and is unnecessary.

@gmestousis A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $9,756 for tax paid to New Jersey. TurboTax computes your NJ tax liability as $8,623.
The IRS raised the qualified education expense to $300 in 2022.

Hi I am having the same issue, my token id is below: 1121448
Receiving the same error message as I work in NJ and live in NY. Please help thank you
IT-112-R (NJ) : Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state."
I work in NJ (i.e., non-resident) but live in NY (resident). I completed non-resident NJ tax section first as requested and then did the NY state section. At the end when it runs checks I'm getting an error saying "IT-112-R (NJ) : Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state.". Thank you!
Hi @MichelleLO
Using turbo tax desktop. So I live in New york(resident) and work in New Jersey (nonresident)- so filing state taxes for both. I went through both federal and state filing, and when I got down to the end to check errors, I received the following:
IT-112-R (NJ) Tax amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state.
The auto-populated amount for Tax amount. - tp is 4242$. However, when I go to the form version, I see that the other state tax computation (generated in #23A) shows as 3016$. When I go to edit, the Tax amount - TP field to be consistent as 3016$ - my amount i owe is basically doubled.
I'm just trying to understand where I went wrong and what I need to calculate to enter the correct amount in this Tax Amount - TP field so the error goes away.
I also "removed" my NY wages line, when doing the NJ return... since the taxable amounts for me on my W2 were different between NY and NJ. I read elsewhere that I should only include the NJ amount - not sure if thatcould be making an issue.
The credit for tax paid to another state is dollar-for-dollar credit, so if you changed from $4,242 to $3,016 your tax would increase by $1,226 ($4,242 - $3,016).
If that was a larger increase someone would have to look at your return.
Changing the other state tax credit would only change numbers below the credit so it would not impact income, deductions etc.
It may increase an underpayment penalty if you owe tax.
You should always go through the other state tax credit section even if TurboTax auto calcs the number.

Hi, could you please advise on my case from above? Token 1121318. When I go to NY State tax section (NJ has been completed as non-resident) and go to "Taxes Paid to Another State", I click on "Edit" next to NJ and go to the section "Enter New Jersey Information", in the text it says "...your total tax for New Jersey of $9,449...". In the box below for "New Jersey tax paid by you" the amount that appears to be pre-populated is $10,531. I'm not sure how this number is calculated as it's done by TurboTax. Based on the feedback provided to others with the same error issue, I assume I need to change $10,531 to $9,449 in the box for "New Jersey Tax paid by you". The error I'm getting is for NY State tax submission "IT-112-R (NJ) : Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state."
Based on my W2 I've overpaid NJ taxes since my "State Income Tax" (box 17) for NJ shows $10,459.17 while what I'm liable for is $9,449 based on the TurboTax calculation. I want to make sure that by changing the number to $9,449 my refund from NJ doesn't get impacted.
I've used TurboTax for many years now and have been submitting NJ (nonresident) and NY (resident) state taxes for a while. I haven't had any deduction changes or employer changes or personal status/filing changes so I'm not quite sure why it's giving me this error this year.
Your assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Lena, I noticed on the forums that you advised some other Turbotax users on this topic last year. Wanted to get your advice and help.
Hi, am having issue with resident credit calculation in IT-112-R. Am resident of NY and worked in NJ.
NJ state tax withholding (as per my W2) was $6623, Turbotax calculated that $5138 is tax due, so there is a NJ refund of $1435 (6623 less 5138).
However, when am reviewing the NY return, the following error keeps coming up. It’s the NY resident credit that Turbotax calculated ($5401). Error says:
@ElvG Change the amount of tax from $10,531 to $9,449. You can’t claim a credit on the New York return for an amount greater than the tax liability on the other state return.
@Manisha747 Change the amount of tax from $5,401 to $5,138. You can’t claim a credit on the New York return for an amount greater than the tax liability on the other state return.
