State tax filing
New York does not allow you to claim a credit for more tax than was actually paid to the other state.
@yfang05 A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $2,179 for tax paid to Massachusetts. TurboTax computes your MA tax liability as $2,069.
- In the New York section go to the screen “Take a look at New York credits and tax”
- Select Taxes Paid to Another State
- On “Enter Massachusetts Information” adjust the Massachusetts tax paid by you to $2,069
You also started but did not make any entries for education interest and student loan interest. If you had paid qualified education expenses or student loan interest you can go back to Deductions & Credits and add those in for an additional tax break.

@ckj134 A diagnostic copy of your tax return shows an entry for $1,401 for tax paid to New Jersey. TurboTax computes your NJ tax liability as $1,395.
- In the New York section go to the screen “Take a look at New York credits and tax”

Your return is also showing an error for a 1099-MISC. You can delete this 1099-MISC if the amount is only $0.01. TurboTax rounds to whole dollars so a $0.01 entry would be $0 and is unnecessary.
