I rolled over from a 401k to an IRA. I don't have a 1099-R. The rollover amount needs to be on the form. Any idea where I put this in Turbotax?

I have a year end statement only.    The IRS says the amount distributed should go on the Pensions and Annuities line.   And write the word "rollover" next to the taxable amount.

You need to ask the 401K plan for the 1099R.  You have to get it.  It may be you don't have to enter it if it was a direct transfer to a Traditional IRA.  You need the 1099R it will have codes on it you need to enter.  Maybe you can log into your 401K account and print the pdf.  Some places don't mail the tax forms and you have to download it yourself.

Thanks for the reply.   Turbotax says you can use a year end statement (which I have).  But they give no instructions on where to enter.   I believe that 1099R is only necessary when there is a distribution.   There was no distribution.      The IRS is very clear that I have to put this on the tax form even though there is nothing to tax.

Enter a 1099R under
Federal Taxes on left
Wages & Income
Then scroll way down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
Then IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) – Click Start

I am not entering in a 1099R which is what that area requires.   Turbotax doesn't say where to enter in a year end statement.

It goes in as a 1099R to get to line 4 or 5.  You really need the 1099R .   Did you try asking the plan for it?  It may have got lost in the mail.  They have to send you a 1099R for over $10.  @dmertz

You don't enter the 5498.  That is from the IRA saying they got the transfer.  You need the actual 1099R from the 401K account.  They have to send you one.

I understand that.   They are not required to send the 1099R in this case because there was no distribution.   Turbotax specifically says that I can use a year end statement.   They do not say where to enter this.  That is what I need an answer to.

I said that.  You enter it in the 1099R place.  Or you don't enter it since it is not taxable.  Everyone else gets a 1099R for rollovers or conversions.  It's not just for distributions.

Please let someone else answer this question.    You are not correct and do not have experience with what I am asking.

A 401(k) plan is REQUIRED to provide you with a 2023 Form 1099-R reporting a 2023 rollover of a 401(k) to to an IRA.  You cannot complete your tax return without it.  Contact the 401(k) plan to obtain the missing form and then enter it into TurboTax.

You said that the originating account is a 401(k), but if the original account was actually an IRA and not a 401(k), and the account was moved by trustee-to-trustee transfer where the funds were never paid to you personally, this would be neither a distribution nor a rollover and would not be reportable on your tax return.

The IRS is clearly stating that my situation needs to be reported.     Neither of you should be saying that this doesn't need to be reported.

Turbotax says I can use an end of year statement.   Everything I read online validates this.     I simply asked where to input this information and instead it turned into incorrect tax advice.

This entire experience has been enough for me to no longer use turbotax after years of using them.   This is the worst experience I have had with "help" from any company.

Where TurboTax says that you can use the year-end statement, that's referring to documentation that only corroborates the amount deposited into the IRA that you might need to indicate in TurboTax as the amount of the distribution rolled over (because it could be the case that not all of the distribution was rolled over).

The distribution from the 401(k), whether rolled over or not, is required to be reported on a Form 1099-R that is required to be entered into TurboTax and is the only way that this can be included on your tax return.  Contact the 401(k) plan to obtain the missing Form 1099-R that they were required to make available to you no later than January 31, 2024.  During the entry of this Form 1099-R reporting the distribution from the 401(k) is where you must describe the nature of the rollover.
