Tax Year Prior to 2020: Refund is due to be deposited into a closed account

@Dweston1983 If you have filed your return already, you will not be able to change any of your banking information. If you have not submitted your return though, here are instructions on how to update this information: How do I change my transferred direct deposit information?

No, you are not lost out of a refund. Once the bank rejects the direct deposit, they will send it back to the IRS. Once the IRS receives the rejected deposit, it can take a few weeks for the IRS to process and mail a paper check to the address listed on your tax return.

Please see Where’s My Federal Refund? to check the status of your refund.

You can also see What if I entered the wrong bank account for direct deposit? And IRS Refund Inquiries 18 for more information.

Your tax refund does not come from TurboTax, it comes from the government. The IRS will mail your refund check once the financial institution rejects the deposit.

If you have already e-filed your return and it has been accepted by the IRS or you paper-filed your tax return and dropped it in the mailbox, you are not able to make any changes to your direct deposit information.

It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to update and show the status. The 21 days is just an estimated time frame. The IRS began processing returns on 2/12, you may not find a record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated.

Since Turbo Tax will not have the status of your refund, continue checking the Where’s My Federal Refund tool for updates. Updates are made daily, usually overnight.

What does pending mean?

Please use this link to track your refund from the IRS.

It can take up to 5 business days for the IRS to receive the funds back. Once they receive the funds they will send you a paper check. This can take up to 10 business days for you to receive it.

If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding your refund, please reach out to the IRS. You will find their contact information in the following link: How do I contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?
