I filed my 2020 return, received a refund then received an unexpected 1099 that will require amending my return. However, TurboTax amended return software is not yet available. I would like to duplicate my filed return without having to insert all the data again and then add the new 1099 data to learn the impact. How can I duplicate my 2020 filed file?

You can print a copy of your tax forms. Purchase the software, and by using the Forms Mode you can enter the information manually.
To amend your return, wait to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or state. If rejected, you can correct and re-send your return. If accepted you should wait until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or confirmation that any tax due has been paid. If you file an amended return while your first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time. In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment. Amended returns can only be mailed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

I have completed all the steps and received my refunds from Federal and State. My wife just got a W2 and I duplicated the file and will need to refund both the state and federal. How do I do this? What is the process for filing an amended return.
The IRS 1040-X is not ready to e-file quite yet. Please see this for more information on how to file an amended tax return with TurboTax. Once they are complete you will be given the amount that you will owe and the option to either pay via direct debit or mail a check for both your federal and state amended returns.

Thanks for the response, but I didn't file using the online version, I used the desktop version. Please help and investigate, don't just reply.
It's very easy to duplicate your return in Desktop. To do so, open the return you want to duplicate. Then click on "File" in the upper left hand corner of your screen. From the dropdown box, click on "Save As" and edit the name of your new return with a new name (What if Scenario, perhaps). Then click on Save. While your at it, it's also a good idea to save your original return to Flash Drive or similar as a backup.
I don't want to seem flippant, but i did that. I need to file an amended return. If there's an easy way to do this 1040X or something, then when will it be available. Also, does it cost additional monies?
Background: I have been told that you can save an "alternate version" of your tax return by duplicating the tax return that you have already filed. In other words, suppose I e-filed my 2023 tax return using the online TT on Feb 20, 2024. The return was accepted by both the Federal and State tax authorities where I live. On July 10, 2024, I had an unforseen taxable event. My tax return for 2024 will probably be similar to 2023 except for this large increase in my taxable income.
Question: Could I use a duplicate version of '23 return and add this additional income to get a reasonable estimation of the tax increase?
@Doebro1968 If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions you can use the What-If worksheet in Forms mode for different scenarios using the 2024 tax tables.
Or you can use the TurboTax calculator TaxCaster to run different scenarios using your 2023 tax data - https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/taxcaster/
Do you have the Desktop program installed? You can download the .tax2023 file from Online and open it in the Desktop program. The save it with another name to test in. That’s what I do. You can test in the copy and there is a What-If worksheet you can use.
To continue in the desktop version see this…….

How do I save my TurboTax Online return as a tax data file?
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to F.ILE - NEW). Just enter some basic personal info like your name and address then click on the State tab at the top and it should ask if you want to download the state program.
