"The problem is, in the past when installing from a CD yiu were required to log into your TurboTax account (or create a new account if you did not have one).  "

I've used TurboTax via disk from Costco for many years (since at least 2003), and I have NEVER had to log into my account in order to install it on my computers. In fact, it always gives me the option to register it later if I wish and continue without registering it, though I do at some point.

In fact, the only reason I had to set up an account with them was to look here in the Community Forums for some answers to questions and to fill out a survey for them.

Thanks for sharing.  Intuit needs to change this.  There is so much misunderstanding out there - even among there own support staff.

Everything you said is true and entirely possible. It is either the desktop version or their license server.  I suspect the desktop version marks the license as "used" and therefore further attempts to download it fails. If that is the case, they just need to identify all these wrongly coded licenses and correct it. They may not be able to do so if there is no distinction between whether all 5 downloads are used vs one desktop install having marked it as used.

Or they don't care...

Wow.  I got an email from TurboTax Community telling me (among other badges) saying that:

You earned the Read 100 Posts badge on Community

They may want to consider what that badge means to TT and the customer given that the only reason I earned it was that it took over a hundred posts to understand this problem.

@Foxleema

Yes it does say that.  However, I contend there are two meaning of the word or.  In your interpretation, it is mutually exclusive choices. In developer coding, 'or' can mean "either or both".  I could even easily interpret the pick one to mean use the CD or download, whichever you can.

There is not reason to distinguish between the 2 types of installs from a license perspective. If you use the CD to install, it simply registers the install as one of the license keys on the TT license server just as a download would. (It has to connect for updates anyway.)   And I suspect that is exactly what it did in years past. This is clearly a bug on TT side.

@User0

It was a nice idea.

" the easiest work around seems to be to copy the installation software off of the CD onto a USB drive or file sharing platform (e.g. Dropbox), copy/download the files onto the desired computer, execute the installation and use the license provided with the CD."

But my install is a Windows PC.  And my son's is a Mac. It appears a Windows OS only copies the Windows installation, not the Mac installation. SO it will not install on the Mac. CD image size is 491MB.  Copied image size is 263 MB. I have looked to see if there is a cloning tools or something I can use, but unable to find one.

I will call Costco to register a complaint as well.

Yes, that was the problem I had. My son lives in a different state and has a MAC so there was no way for him to install the files unless I mailed him my CD. Listen up TurboTax....this is the very, very simple solution. Make all TT install files for PC and MAC available online. You already track the number of times an installation key (code) is used and we're allowed five (5) each. The install files without a valid code is of no value to anyone...so why not just make the download(s) available to anyone that wants them? This would solve the problem completely!!!

If you installed on Windows PC, but need to also install on a MAC in your same household,

  • BUT your MAcbook lacks a CD drive,
  • AND you cannot downloads due to the same issue as the title of this thread,

You can:

  1. Call TT support to get a new key issued for the download.  Some have been successful, but it appears others have not. Expect l-o-o-n-g hold times as we approach tax deadlines.
  2. Or make a copy of the CD. But making a simple copy of the CD via your Windows PC to load onto a USB or file sharing site  (like Google drive or OneDrive)  does not work if you have a MAC.  It only copies the Windows based files, not the Mac based files. You have to create an iso image of the CD.  I used a free utility called ImgBurn.  It was an easy thing to do.  We now have TT on both PC and a MAC.

I purchased my CD from Costco.

I tried downloading software on my laptop using online link but when i input my key and hit download i get error:

This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads.

I just opened the package 2 days ago and did not even download it using any other way.

Customer service is the worst ever i experienced in my life.

Contacting customer support did not help me. I called twice - the first time I was on hold for over an hour and she said she would call back and never did. The second time I was on hold for almost 2 hours and she told me she was expecting a specialist to join the call. The specialist never joined the call and the original representative simply disconnected without so much as an apology or explanation. Turbo Tax is getting really bad - not just with customer service but with major bugs that it doesnt bother to fix. Beside the license code bug it has a major bug in calculating deduction for mortgage interest if you refinance a jumbo loan. This is another bug that TT has not bothered to fix for 2 years and we over paid taxes last year because of Turbotax. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/bug-with-refinance-on-a-large-mo...

Your support service is the most useless I have seen. Person called and hung up without even solving the issue.

Wait time is horrendous.

Thanks! Added the setup.exe file to OneDrive and ran the program from the OneDrive folder. My husband spent over an hour with someone at TurboTax and they were unable to give us any solutions that worked!

@Nitabai

Yes it is an ugly issue.  I'm not sure about it being an issue for 2 years.  It worked fine for me last year.  Nonethelss, save yourself any further pain by copying the CD to the cloud storage of your choice (if you are trying to install on a PC) and run the setup from there.

Or if you are installing a MAC, then follow the procedure I used (listed above.
