Are you referring to your paystub? Paystubs almost never match the W-2 you get from your employer. You need to enter the information as shown on your W-2. That is the information that went to the IRS under your Social Security number---so the amount you enter on your return needs to match your W-2.
Please explain more. Taxes paid might be more than just federal withholding.
If you are looking at a review or summary screen those add in other kinds of taxes paid too. Make sure your actual 1040 return is right.
Other taxes could be any of the following:
Self-Employment tax
Unreported SS & Medicare tax
10% Early Distribution of Retirement plans penalty
Advance EIC from W-2
Household Employment tax
Etc.
Like some could be for State and local taxes paid...
-any state withholding from your paychecks, retirement checks, unemployment checks, etc.
-a state tax due (for any year) you paid last year
-any state estimated tax payments you made during year including an overpayment applied from last year
-any local taxes withheld on your checks like SDI in box 14 or 19 on your W2
You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
And why do you think the tax liability is wrong? That is the Total Tax on 1040 line 24. What other lines above 24 are wrong?
sorry I submitted the question from the app and it only let me enter so many characters. I thought
I was entering a search query. I have entered (2) W2 and (1) 1099DIV documents, and the tax withholding from those documents don't match the "total taxes paid" that it is calculating on the return review screen. The number that it shows as the sum of the 2 W2 documents on the summary screen for income is right, but that number doesn't match what is shown on the "total taxes paid" review screen. These are the only income and tax payment entries into the system.
Finally, the total tax liability that it has calculated is not right according to the 1040 tax instructions:
Taxable income. If line 15 is— | (a) Enter the amount from line 15 | (b) Multiplication amount | (c) Multiply (a) by (b) | (d) Subtraction amount | Tax. Subtract (d) from (c). Enter the result here and on the entry space on line 16. |
At least $100,000 but not over $201,050 | $ | × 22% (0.22) | $ | $ 9,894.00 | $ |
Over $201,050 but not over $383,900 | $ | × 24% (0.24) | $ | $ 13,915.00 | $ |
Over $383,900 but not over $487,450 | $ | × 32% (0.32) | $ | $ 44,627.00 | $ |
Over $487,450 but not over $731,200 | $ | × 35% (0.35) | $ | $ 59,250.50 | $ |
Over $731,200 | $ | × 37% (0.37) | $ | $ 73,874.50 | $ |
The number it is calculating is about $1400 higher than what the formula produces.
For your review showing Federal taxes paid? (plus some other credits).
Check lines 17 to 32 of your Form 1040, to see if you received some of the various other credits you didn't realize were there.

If no other credits on the 1040, and to check the details on the regular withholding stuff (& estimated taxes paid)
IF you have the desktop software, you can switch to Forms Mode, and review the Tax Payments worksheet.
Line 20 of that form should be the same number, BUT, the lines above it will show a breakdown where the $$ came from...like, when you filed Fed last year, did you let the IRS keep some of your refund.
But if that worksheet shows all of the $$ coming from only your W-2 forms, then you should open those W-2 forms and see if you made an entry error.

it doesn't let me see the actual forms, I am using the online version.
@rodd2 You can look at your 1040 and Schedules 1-3

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
thank you! that helps, but I don't know where it is getting those numbers. It has my AGI correct, but the "Tentative tax" is not right, assuming it is based on the 1040 calculations, but there's also "other taxes" and those add up to an amount of "total tax" that is also not what the 1040 calculation tables says it should be. is there a way to see where it gets those numbers?
never mind! I see there is an option to preview 1040, looking at that now. Thanks!
As I posted above don't go by the summary and review screens. Those add in a lot of other things and taxes. You have to check the actual 1040 and schedules. Did your 1099 Div have anything in box 2a?
There are like 7 different ways to calculate the tax.
It depends what kind of income you have. Even though the full amount shows up in the total income on the 1040 line 7, if you have capital gains or qualified dividends the tax is not taken from the tax table but is calculated separately from Schedule D. The tax will be calculated on the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet. It does not get filed with your return. In the online version you need to save your return as a pdf file and include all the worksheets to see it.
Before filing you can preview the 1040 or print the whole return. You have to pay any fees first before you can see all the forms, etc.

thank you for all the help, I am getting closer. being able to see all the other forms will be helpful. I've been walking through them manually and still have some questions on where it is getting the numbers, but it's a lot closer now.
