Unknown "TurboTax State" Charge?

I got TurboTax Deluxe and when I purchased it, I was also charged for "TurboTax State: _____" (with appropriate state in blank field), however, after I was charged for both Deluxe and this state thing, I was then prompted with "How would you like to pay your state tax?" State tax I owe matches what was taken along with purchase of Deluxe. I'm curious what the first charge was for if not for paying my owed state tax.

When you use online TurboTax software there are separate fees for federal and state returns.    If you used online Deluxe, then the fee was $59 for your federal return and another fee of $59 for the state return.  Plus tax.

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons     (BEFORE you e-file) :

• Remove Premium Services
• Remove MAX Defend & Restore
• Remove a state
• Remove PLUS Help & Support
• Remove Pay With Your Refund

If you used the desktop download, there is a $25 state e-file fee.  You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state return when you use desktop software.

You usually get 1 free state download program in the Desktop program.   Which Deluxe did you buy and where?  There are 2 versions of Deluxe in the stores. One with the state download and one without. Check your box. Also be careful on the screen to pick the state. You just click Edit or Start by the state listed and not Add State at the bottom, that's to buy another one.

Then each state return (including the first one) is $25 to efile. Or you can print and mail state for free.   If you want any fees deducted from your refund there is an Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California).  So pay with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.

I file on my phone, so I just purchased the prompted deluxe when needed. It makes sense that I would be charged extra to file state through TurboTax, but I don't remember this charge from any previous years I had filed with them which is why I am a little confused.

@Juzmoc If you used your phone then you used the mobile app---which is just a way of using online TurboTax, so if you used Deluxe, you had to pay fees for both federal and for state.     Perhaps in past years you used the Free Edition so you were not familiar with the fees in the higher versions.

Yeah, I have used  the free version in the past so that makes more sense. To be completely clear, when you purchase Deluxe, you are charged a fee for both federal and state return. If that's the case, then thank you very much for your help!
