I agree; I purchased the Delux Fed & State (+ e-file) f/$40. Got *NO* credit f/that. Cost this year (my last!) was $140 (not including the initial $40!). Last year = $80 f/same service. I think I've had 3 years of 'bait-&-switch'. Turbo Tax is rated @ # 3 our of ~6 possible services. It is time f/me to try #1 or #2. GoodBye Turbo-Tax.
The fact that there’s a $40 fee to deduct TurboTax fees from the refund should be PROMINENTLY displayed when choosing that option! >=(
In my case the $40 is more than the fee I even needed to pay!
I love everything else about TurboTax, but for as transparent and helpful you are in the actual filing, there’s no excuse for not being more transparent about your fees. I could’ve and would’ve easily paid the small upgrade fee with my ApplePay while filing had I known this. Not. Happy. >=(
Though I've used them for several years now I also have a problem with the sneaky way Turbo Tax disperses info about costs like the 1 mentined here. I was quite disgusted & nearly changeded to another company. But had already input most of my stuff, plus got a really considerate, smart Turbo Tax guy on the phone who did a good job by me. The service was good., as is their system of inputting our tax numbers. But not knowing what you're paying for up front is stressfull, deceiving & leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So we'll seeabout next year, as I have time to research other providers.
Paid 49.88 for the program and they want another 65.00 to file the returns.
@DMMH There is no extra fee to efile. Efiling is free and included. Did you buy the Desktop program? There is a $25 fee to efile a state return. Then to have the $25 deducted from your federal refund is a Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California) or you can pay with a credit card to avoid the extra charge. Or you can print and mail state for free.
Or you might have accidentally used the Online version instead of the Desktop program on your computer.
I've used turbo tax since 2003. Every year I click on a link in one of the malady emails they've sent and complete my taxes online. This it wasn't clear at all that I was using the more expensive "self employed" version till the checkout at very end. At that point the only option was to clear everything and start over which I chose not to do and just pay more money. I have never been self employed and since I've used turbo tax every year since 2003 the turbo tax software should know that. If it can't figure out I'm not self employed by the W-2's I enter from 3 employers every year for the last 19 years than how well does it figure out the rest of my taxes correctly?!?!? Very disappointing
Yes too expensive
Mine was going to be about double what it cost me last year for what seems to be the same returns
federal and 2 state returns (with a rental and capital gains taxes) $190 less less a $15 I found online
You pay for the convenience of the auto loading of data. Except this year I couldn’t get turbo tax to load my investment data that it had done seamlessly last year - same broker no change
without the convenience I wasn’t going to get ripped off. I looked at tax slayer and didn’t find it user friendly enough
Then I came across freetaxusa.com - and I knew there was more manual entry because they tell you what it does and does not do. Federal return is free regardless of income and my state returns were $15 each less a 10% discount. So I paid less than $30 this year including tax 🙂
The funny thing is I now know a lot more about how my state taxes are calculated and was happy to learn which was a weird benefit I was not expecting
i think adding in my w2’s and my capital gains info maybe added about an hour in total for me but I learned what was required and how things are worked out
i would recommend that many do a reality check and look elsewhere
I completely agree this year was $325 !! Thats double last year !!
The extra fees and such is getting out of hand. I will be doing my taxes next year someway else as well. Now they can't even wait for the IRS to process the refund and are just going to take it out of my account on a random day good thing they gave me an email so I know.
But seriously.. just wait for the tax return to process and maybe I wouldn't feel so ripped off or have noticed the doubling of fees.
A program that has no live support is useless. Not only that, but you don't have anyone to call live in order to order the program or part of it like additional state.
I agree
If you qualify you can use one of the 9 IRS FREE FILE options that are made available mid January ... for 2020 your AGI must be $72K or less ... https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
PS... for the 2021 taxes there will only be 8 since TT is dropping out of the FREE FILE program.
It is $240 CDN this year. For a small business and for the very poor value it is unbelievably and very annoyingly expensive to use Turbotax. Intuit products long ago were good and fairly priced but it seems they have gotten so profit gouging and indifferent to the needs of their customers. Every year big % increases with no real improvement.

This is the TurboTax US user community website.
Go to this TurboTax Canada website for assistance with a Canadian tax return or the TurboTax Canada editions - https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/community/turbotax-support/help/03/en-ca
The ENTIRE intuit line is the same way. We have gone from an excellent product line to a company begging for money at every turn. I use quickboooks and other Intuit products for my business and am working with my accounting team to drop the products completely. This will be my last year filing with Turbotax and I have been using them for 20 years...so sad...
I was charged 169.00 for a simple return. I was labeled as self employed when I did not work 2021, I'm retired. I'm requesting my fee be returned.
