"This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads."

The Turbo Tax phone support are clueless about this issue. After keeping me on hold for 1 hour 45 minutes, the phone representative disconnected!! TT needs to require those installing via CD to associate with the users account instead of assigning to some dummy account at their end. Now my son who does not have a CD drive on his laptop has no way to download the software using my license code.

Hey @Nitabai,

Extremely sorry for the difficulties. I've generally been pretty satisfied with TurboTax, but this is s definite ding. Are you able to use one of the work arounds? If your son is located with you and your computers have USB ports, maybe you could copy the installation files from the CD onto a USB memory device. Then plug the USB memory device into your son's computer and install from there. If your son is away for school or a job, try something like using Dropbox (@tomlamiam), maybe one of the applications that lets you email large files, or the Cloud?? (if that's possible, but I'd be sure delete the file afterwards) . . . anyplace you can post it and your son can retrieve it. Of course, you shouldn't have to do any of this. Good Luck!

@rcsmk70, I do not understand your question. But if the license code has never been used, this thread might not be for you. If you are getting the message on the very first use of the license code, then your only option might be TurboTax customer support. Good Luck.

Hey @JeanneLO ,

Just a thought, if you read the thread, I think the question will be obvious and perhaps you, as an employee, can escalate this issue within TurboTax. Summary: once an installation is made from a purchased CD (using the computer's CD/DVD drive), the license cannot be used to make a download installation (despite the directions on the TurboTax CD packaging). @macuser_22 reports that this is a known issue to TurboTax, yet the problem persists and TurboTax customers spend ridiculous amount of time on the phone with TurboTax customer service agents that are oblivious to the issue or how to deal with it. It is only the beginning of February. Does TurboTax think this problem is going to mysteriously disappear as more and more people start doing their taxes? I hope you can put this issue before someone in TurboTax with the authority to do something.

"This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads."

The issue is that I purchased a TurboTax Premier 2020 CD and installed it on my desktop. It did not ask me to log into my account during installation. So it was never associated with my account. Later when my son tries to download using my license code on his laptop (which has no CD drive), he gets error message that "The license code has already been associated with an account". He gets this error message even if he logs into my account and tries to download. It appears that when a CD is first used, TurboTax associates the download to some default account that does not belong to that specific user. So unless the CD is used, we cannot download using the license code, which is not helpful when the laptop has no CD drive.

I spent over 1 hour 45 minutes with a clueless phone representative, who finally disconnected without telling me. When I google on this error message, I can see that it was reported in past 2 years and TurboTax has not bothered to fix the issue.

This is a new issue for 2020 only.  The ONLY "fix"is for the Customer Support agent to verify yiur Licensed code to be sure it is legitimate  and then issue you a new license code.  It is not possible to fix this in software since the software is burned on your CD and cannot be changed.   The problem occurs  when you first install the CD and enter the license code for the FIRST time and there is no way to repeat that.

See several  threads reported in March 2020 - so obviously it was an issue with the TurboTax for 2019 as well

TurboTax representative disconnected my call after keeping me on hold for over 1 hour 45 minutes

That was an unrelated issue.     The issue in this thread that I am responding to, is installing on one computer using the CD and then attempting to get a download for a second computer.

This is new for 2020 only because the license code is not associated with your TurboTax account as it was in 2019 - it is only associated with the physical CD and not the download - if you do not install from the CD the license code cannot be located .    (2019 had other license code issues, but not this one).

Do you happen to know if anyone has challenged TurboTax on rather or not it is possible to fix it? Totally agree that they cannot change code on the CD. But when the download is attempted, it isn't accessing the CD, its accessing what I assume is some TurboTax database. Where did it (my assumed TurboTax database) get its information? Why can't the software writing to it (my assumed TurboTax database) be altered to fix the problem?

I think some open discussion on the problem would help. It might not be "fixable" but at least we would know some effort was put into it.

Because the "Amazon only" download is also a one of a kind build only for Amazon (the same as the Amazon CD.).   Re-downloading it only gets  the same original Amazon only build.

Just called Turbo Tax. The rep explained that when you purchase the physical disk, you can either install the disk OR download it using the code (not both!). Once you install the disk, it automatically uses that code and basically locks the code making it unable to be downloaded. You should be able to take that disk and install it in other computers with that disk, but you will be unable to download it and install WITHOUT the disk.

In the future, if you just use the download code (and do not install the disk), it will attach the license code to your intuit account and be accessible on additional computers as long as you are logged into that same account. It is ridiculous that Intuit does NOT make this clear on their software and packaging before you install the disk. The rep was very nice and obviously explained all of this to me, but unfortunately was unable to offer me a new code for the download on my non-disk-drive laptop.

@macuser_22,

Sorry for being so slow, but you lost me. How does the "Amazon only" download figure into the problem I and others experienced after purchasing a CD with capability to do CD installs and/or download installs, but when trying to do a download install after doing a CD install the TurboTax download objects with the message that the license is associated with another account?
