Thanks again. I'll try putting in a music CD, since nothing happened when I put in the Turbotax CD (apart from getting a green light on the external drive but then it seemed to be loading for 10 minutes or so before I gave up each time). I wondered if the drive was trying to burn or rewrite the CD rather than reading it.
What Windows is on your computer? If you have WIndows 10 and the CD won't load see
If you have a friend or family member with a Windows computer that still has a CD drive then you can download the exe file to a thumb drive from their computer to use on your computer.
Good point. Find another computer. Or if you can get the CD read in the external drive to copy to usb. If you are having trouble installing the CD try copying the CD to a usb flash drive. See SteamTrains post here
Thanks, Critter C and VolvoGirl (and any others who replied). I actually uninstalled the external CD/DVD drive, plugged it into a different USB port, checked to see if it was working (first, by trying out a music CD) and that it had updated drivers, and then made sure the Turbotax CD was seated properly and snapped into place, and this time it worked and I could install it on my new PC. So I now have Turbotax Deluxe 2021 on my new Dell PC and could use it to open my 2021 tax files. When I have more time, I will try installing the last few years of Turbotax, too, in case I ever need to go back to older tax files. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my dilemma. After getting the latest advice from you all (and in case the external CD/DVD drive stops working again or dies), I will try to copy the Turbotax CD onto a flash/thumb drive. There might even be an internal or external CD drive on my new office desktop computer (which I haven't used yet, since I've been working remotely for a long time) but if it doesn't, I can find someone else who does have one. Meanwhile, I'm sorry to have taken up your time, but do appreciate the help. And now I don't have to try to call Turbotax again!
So you installed the CD on it? And activated it with the same 16 digit code? Hmmm, I thought that wouldn't work. Good!
Thanks for the suggestion. I think I didn't want to spend money on an external DVD drive unless I was sure it would solve the problem. But for so little investment, I can risk it. I lost access to all my files and applications when Microsoft locked me out of my computer. I am hoping to find a technician that is able to unlock the drive for me.
whoever gets this remember I'm 81 and not too tech smart. All I'm trying to do is put turbotax on my laptop bc I have already put it on my computer but I keep getting the phrase above. Now if you answer this please email me the answer bc I don't know how to access the posts

How did you install the program the first time? Using the CD or as a download ? If it was a CD does your laptop have a CD drive ?

Where I look for "Dowloads"
See the post made just a couple before you. It looks like the link is there.
Please see the below TurboTax Help Articles for assistance with locating your downloaded software:

I may have found a fairly simple solution to the problem "This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads", dozens of people reported when they bought the retail version of TT 2020 or 2021 CD but wanted to download and install TT on a computer without a CD drive. This problem is already discussed for nearly two years and Intuit did not provide a solution!
I've spent several hours searching the web for a fix but couldn't find one.
I then decided to copy all files from the TT CD to an empty USB stick and then plugged the stick in an empty USB port on my notebook (which does not have a CD drive) and installed TT successfully from there.
It worked without any issues and was able to activate TT with my license code.
Try it and give a thumbs up if it worked for you.
You say find the account that is associated with the license code?? HAVE TRIED AND TRIED ALL SORTS OF ACCOUNTS TO NO AVAIL?? WHO HAS IT???
