Thanks again. I'll try putting in a music CD, since nothing happened when I put in the Turbotax CD (apart from getting a green light on the external drive but then it seemed to be loading for 10 minutes or so before I gave up each time). I wondered if the drive was trying to burn or rewrite the CD rather than reading it.
