Not a good idea to file paper return with the IRS. They don't process it. I filed paper return in October, the IRS received it in November, so I checked the status in December, January, February, got nothing. So, I decided to have a tax practitioner to efile it for me. I got the refund in 2-3 weeks in check instead of direct deposit as it's stated on the refund section. But, at least I got the refund. The IRS also gave me interest because of their slow process.
@savetacks4me Not sure why you were "splitting" the AGI when you tried to enter it for you and your spouse. Going forward, when you file a joint return, the AGI is exactly the same for each one of you. Lots of folks had trouble with rejections for AGI for 2020 because the IRS got so backlogged with 2019 returns that many of the AGI's did not make it into the database. If you run into a problem again, try using "zero" as the AGI. For 2020, your AGI is on line 11 of your Form 1040. Make a note of it somewhere so that you will know that when you need to e-file for 2021. Even better would be to save a paper copy of your tax return.
I've explained this many times on this forum, but here goes.
The problem is not the IRS. The problem is a bug in both TT and HRBlock that causes the AGI to be transmitted incorrectly, resulting in a rejectioh from the IRS.
Other online tax programs do not have this bug. After tons of frustration last year wiith TT and IRS rejections, even with trying the trick of entering 0 for the AGI, I finally tried FreeTaxUSA. I figured it was free so what the heck. My tax return, with exactly the same info I had given TT, was accepted within minutes, refund received in just 2 weeks. Others on this forum followed my lead and had the same happy experience with FreeTaxUSA.
(I am in no way affiliated with FreeTaxUSA, I am just a person who wanted my taxes done and out of the way, And I refused to file a paper return and wait 12 weeks for my refund. )
I keep getting the same thing and it is so frustrating. This is the first year that has ever happened. I even went to the IRS site and obtained a copy of my transcript just in case there were any changes....and everything is the same as what I have. I guess I will have to mail it in, but I really didn't want to. Very frustrating.
@St54 Try using zero
Thank you. If it gets rejected again (when?) I will try that and post if it works
Please scroll up a bit and read my Oct 9, 2021 post. Good luck.
Same here..I even downloaded an official transcript to verify. As noted elsewhere here -- thanks -- the solution that worked for me was entering "0". don't ask why this worked, it just did. (the IRS might be so far behind that last year's return wasn't available to the system to verify -- even though I had filed by March 1 and got my refund and account squared away.
I'm happy to hear that entering "0" resolved the issue for you.
After being rejected 3 times for "Spouses AGI"(I even went on the IRS website and checked I was entering the appropriate and correct AGI) I entered zero and it was accepted 😫. So stupid that the IRS is not on the same page and that taxpayers have to be so frustrated with this. It should of worked when I entered the correct AGI but it did not but zero worked.
We are happy it was resolved. If you have more questions, please feel free to reach out.
I file a joint return AGI is not separate on my 1040 yet IRS is asking for my AGI and my wifes AGI separately
If you filed with your spouse last year then you and your spouse have the same 2020 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter 0 for one of you).
If you filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.
@Scottstr
Because they don't know if you filed joint last year. On a Joint return there is only 1 AGI. You use the same AGI for each of you.
