Super frustrating. I ended up deleting my import as I tried several approaches to push it through. Hope that the updates will be available. Thinking about my decision to stay with E*Trade.
Has anyone tried to contact E*TRADE to resolve this?
I am deeply grateful for those who have called TT customer support on this Etrade issue, and reported back that it didn't work and the response was bot-like. You have saved the rest of us from the same unpleasant experience. Thank you thank you.
At this point, I would suggest that on these forums we agree on what are the specific bugs we would like TT to fix. I'll take a first shot:
The 1099-B download function is buggy in the sense that it does not validate data, nor allow users to change or even see incorrect information. Thus, the first time we see there's an error is in the final error check, and even then it is impossible to see the error clearly, or fix the data since we can't see it in the worksheets. We are requesting that Intuit add an ability to see and edit the data field that was incorrectly labeled as "N" by Morgan Stanley.
What do y'all think?
Hopefully TT or MS will fix whatever they have to so that the forms download without the N code in the form rather than still leaving it to us to make modifications after the fact.
I just called Etrade to make them aware of the issue. They are unaware at this time. You should call also to make sure they understand the gravity of the problem. 800...387...2331
I called them this morning. They are NOT aware of the issue and she seemed to say they needed more people to contact them to make it a priority. Go figure. Anyhow, call them ASAP.
I did in fact call E*Trade this morning and amazingly enough got a live person within just a couple of minutes. I'm not terribly optimistic that E*Trade will resolve it on their side; even though both sides are at fault it seems like more of an explicit bug on the TT side in that it won't let you edit the values.
If you haven't called E*Trade yet, maybe give them a call. Admittedly, I called at the crack of dawn but I still got a live person almost immediately. However (again) I think this is much more of a bug on TT side. It's bad enough that they completely biffed the new format E*Trade sent after the Morgan Stanley merger but to give us a dialogue box explicitly asking to change a code and then not allowing saving the new value is something that shouldn't have passed even the most rudimentary software QA process.
I also contacted TT about this (via Chennai by the sound of it). As annoying as this is I'd encourage anyone reading this to take a few minutes to report this issue. I was trying to find a way to message someone with links to these forum posts here, but couldn't find it.
The requisite contact information:
E*Trade -- 1800 387 2331
TurboTax -- Log in with your account [i.e,. the one you use to post here] --> Go to "Help" --> "TurboTax Help Center" --> click on "Contact Us" button below. You'll then get a proprietary phone number to call.
I admittedly did this at about a quarter to six mountain time so I might've lucked out, but both efforts really only took me <= 10 minutes total. I'm hoping if they get a dozen or more calls from everyone then someone will make this an urgent matter. I just don't want to assume that someone checks the forum posts here because I'm getting the feeling that's not happening and everyone is probably expecting "someone else" to just do it.
Oh, ffs... it edited out the E*Trade number. Well, it's the one eight hundred, three eight seven two three three one number that should be easily findable on that web page. I just went through the usual irritating banality of trying to navigate the help options before finally "0" got me to a live person, which amazingly happened almost immediately (memories of waiting two hours not too long ago and still never reaching a live person still fresh in my head.)
Has anybody ascertained whether this is a TT issue or a Morgan Stanley issue?
I'm looking at the1099-B I printed from MS and I can't see anywhere where NOMINEE or N code is shown. The only name shown on the form is mine. Under Name Reported to the IRS it's also my name.
I may back out the imported 1099--B and manually enter the info to see if that makes the N code disappear.
Also, is the imported data file the same as shown on the printable 1099-B available from E*Trade/MS?
It's disappointing that what should be a feature becomes a pain...
I called Etrade at 9:21 Eastern to report problem. After talking to a few folks I did get a hold of someone who told me that the issue is in their system, is known and is being reviewed for a fix. I was told I would get a call back when the issue has been resolved. I will report back when I hear something.
I called MS ETrade this morning and got through right away and explained the issue:
Import of 1099-B is coming into TurboTax with an erroneous N adjustment code for every transaction for the file after the conversion of ETrade to morgan stanley, while the earlier file is not.
I also said the MS paper copy looks fine, so it's a data import issue between MS and TT
They claimed they didnt see this as an issue in their system yet (go figure!) but logged it as an issue to be addressed
So the earlier advice to call them and report it is a good one - everyone please call and report it and maybe it will eventually show in their system as a priority issue
The fact that one file come in ok and the other not suggests TT may be using same import routine but seeing different formats at MS but i really cant say that for sure
They told me the usual give it a few days to be resolved
FWIW
I deleted the Morgan Stanley imported data and manually entered the 1099-B info myself using the 1099-B form I printed from E*Trade...
The TT error check came back clean, with no "ADJUSTMENT AMOUNT" or CODE N errors.
Must be a TT issue.
Now I'm waiting for them to issue an updated fix for Schedule K-1.
I think the problem with TT is what it receives from Morgan Stanley can not be manually removed if needed, it assumes the import data is always gospel correct. It will let you add missing data but not delete anything that came in. And it pretty much should be that way, but somehow this N code is being brought in either from a bad read by TT or a bad export by MS.
But it makes sense if you enter manually it will work fine as there was no imported data that it is assuming is right.
Unfortunately i have too many sales to make it reasonable to manually enter them all and anyway thats why i bought TT to avoid this in the first place.
