The software is figuring out how much you owe.   Have you entered everything?   Look at your tax return.  If you owe federal tax it is shown on line 37 of your Form 1040.

PREVIEW 1040

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901539-how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

We do not know if you are preparing a state return---or what state-- but your summary will tell you if you owe the state.  Or you can print out your state return and look at it to see if you owe the state.

Are you missing the "refund monitor" at the top of your screen that shows if you are getting a refund or if you owe tax due?   Have you clicked on "Review" to make the refund monitor appear?

For your state or federal?

For your federal, you will look at line 37 of your 1040 to see how much you owe.

Which state?  Your state return line to show your amount due will vary based on which state, but most of them will say either taxes you owe or taxes due.

On the menu bar on the left that shows.

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the pop-up menu
  4. Select View Tax Summary
  5. On the left sidebar, select Preview my 1040

Of if you are using the desktop version, you can switch to forms mode to see the forms.

You can also look at the top of your screen at the refund monitor.  This number changes as you go, but it is the same number you will see on the forms, but without the details on how the number was calculated.

This is what I’m seeing since I’m on my phone and I can’t really tell what I owe when it says I owe two things and I can only input one amount on IRS payment

It looks like you are getting a Federal refund of $398 and owe a payment to the state of $585.

So does the 187$ mean nothing?

That is netting out the difference between a refund you are getting and tax you owe.

You are getting a federal refund of $398.

You owe---and must pay----Oklahoma $585 by April 15, 2024.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Yes, so the program is talking about your total tax situation.

Since you are getting a 398 refund but you need to pay the state 585, the program is saying that all in all, you are paying an additional 187.

Seems confusing, since you do need to send the 585 to the state.

The $187 you see is just the difference between the $585 and the $398.     ($585 - $398 = $187).   TurboTax subtracts one from the other to show you the difference between the tax owed and the refund.   But do NOT expect the IRS to send any money to the state toward the tax you owe to the state.  You have to pay the state that $585 yourself.

It depends. However, in most cases you will have plenty of time to amend and pay the exact balance due for your Maryland (MD) return by the due date of April 15th.

The amended form will be ready later in the year. By using the link, Tax Forms Availability, you can continue to check to see when it's ready. If you decide you do need to amend use the steps in the link below.
