If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2021 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

I have erased and asked to start over so I can go to the Free edition and it keeps changing it to deluxe without asking me.

What am I doing wrong?

As long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered your product, you can erase your return and start from scratch in TurboTax Online. If you have done any of these things, you'll need to manually edit your return. Please follow the instructions here to clear the return. If there is a circumstance that requires you to upgrade, the software will keep updating. @Shydgw

If you have not registered, paid or e-filed you can clear and start over in a lower version of the software.
