I am very confused. When I started doing my taxes, TurboTax showed an offer for the PLUS version at 29 dollars. Then, when I tried to file it forces me to upgrade to the Deluxe version. Why? My taxes are very simple, and never had any problem with TT, either using the free versions or an upgraded one.

TurboTax recommends the tax solution based on the information you provide. The TurboTax Free Edition supports simple tax returns that can be filed on Form 1040, plus unemployment income. Anything outside of that, it's going to recommend you upgrade.
You can always downgrade to a lower-priced version of TurboTax online, however, you won't be able to do so if you have already submitted payment or deducted the TurboTax fees from your refund.
I am sorry. This answer does not really explain the issue. TT does not "recommend"; it actually forces one to upgrade otherwise you cannot really file.

Plus benefits is not an upgrade it is considered an add-on. The below TurboTax help article provides details about what is included in the Plus add-on package.
What's included in PLUS Help & Support? If you decide you don't want the add-on, you can remove it by following the steps here.
If the system is prompting you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe, the system is detecting that your tax situation requires additional forms or schedules that are not covered in the free edition. This TurboTax help article will help you determine if you qualify for TurboTax Free Edition: Is TurboTax Free Edition right for me?
For additional information about being prompted to upgrade, please see Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition?
After reviewing the above and you feel your situation still meets the requirements for TurboTax Free Edition, you can switch back by using clear and start over to erase your current return and start from scratch. You can start over as long as you have not registered the product, submitted payment, or deducted your TurboTax fee from your refund.
There is no Tax tools menu. The left menus shows 'deluxe version'. There is no Tax tools or Start over or clear, in the Find tool. I have been dupped by the Turbo Tax marketing madness. And although I have used TT, as well as Quickbooks for many years, I will NEVER recommend these products and will continue my return with Simple Tax, H&R or one of the other sane competitors. So long!
I don't want to upgrade to Deluxe. I have completed my tax and need to file. How can I bypass the upgrade?
@Sunshinetn612010 To downgrade---- if you have not registered, paid or e-filed

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY? I WANT THE FREE EDITION
The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now. Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's. Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition. Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version and if you are watching the screens carefully you are alerted to the upgrade.
When you chose to “start” in the Free Edition —
Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only” If you click that link it brings up this information:
You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*
*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

How does TurboTax make any money?
Customers with more complex tax situations will file with our paid TurboTax products that provide all the additional forms and guidance they need. We also offer additional benefits that go beyond filing your taxes, but they are optional and are not required to file simple taxes for free. We hope that, over time, as our customers with simple returns need more capabilities as their financial situations change (for example owning a home, having a child, managing investments), they have loved our products and services so much that they will choose our paid TurboTax offerings to prepare and file their returns.

How can I see my TurboTax fees?

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons:
Forced to upgrade for something that you didn't do anything. My taxes was filed the same way that they were filed last year. Nothing changed nothing was different but yet you force me to do this and yet, and then charge me for it, I have a problem with that. Yeah, something's wrong with this problem with this. Also it would not even let me go by pass it and it took a hundred and something dollars out of my deduction so yeah something's crooked with this so i'm a problem with that
For billing issues, you will need to contact TurboTax customer support. Please see How do I contact TurboTax?
