TurboTax is equipped to handle around 10,000 individual transactions per brokerage account.  Are you trying to enter more than this?  For more details, please see the Help Article here for further assistance.

Oops! It appears there was a drop in our connection." comes up anytime I try to do anything on TurboTax. I have used multiple browsers, devices, and internet connections.

Its around 7000, the software remembered the TD Ameritrade account from last year and attempted to import the docs, I proceeded not thinking anything of it, i figured if it failed I would just get an error, it was right after that import attempt the account got corrupted and now I cant get into anything even after trying multiple browsers, device types, multiple computers even different internet connect as support suggested

Guys,

I went through this and it was painful trying to debug this. It happened for me with coinbase API, for some of you it is brokerage. My gut feeling is once it hits a certain amount of transactions it craps out.

Here is my suggestion

1) Open a new account if you do not have option to clear and start over. The customer reps don't also have ability to clear and start over for you. They confirmed it to me. Though at some point, they think it will clear itself out after filing timeline( wont be useful for you this year).

2) Forget 7000 transactions, even i was successful importing almost 5k transactions but it will not work when attempt to file, it will throw an error - unable to save your return when you attempt to efile. This is because turbotax has a limitation currently on file size. it gets really big once you upload x amount of transactions, dont ask me why.

The tax expert gave me this direction after trying all possibilities and my return recently got accepted by IRS.

So the solution depends on your case, reach out to tax expert within turbotax live.

Normally lets say you have 7000 transactions, 5000 of them have no wash sales, you can add it up and summarize it as one row. the remaining 2000 wash sales you are technically supposed to enter one by one but you can summarize it as well if your amount is too large and run into the turbotax size problem.

What i mean by that is , count the number of digits in your proceeds/costbasis/ washsale-adjustments.

If it is more than 7 digits figure, you cannot type it in anyway. Turbotax has a limitation , it wont let you enter big numbers like 9 digits. They allow only up to 7 digits.

So in an example where you have 9 digit proceeds, 9 digit cost basis , 6-7 digit wash sale, you can technically break it into fewer smaller transactions that fit in 7 digits and you don't have to worry about specifying which stock ticker it is.  Something like short term or long term TD stock for description , start date of 1.1.21 , end date of 12.31.21 and type in proceeds, cost basis and wash sales in adjustments. That should allow you to consolidate all your 7k transactions in less than 50 to 100 transactions.

Don't go by my advise, talk to the tax expert from turbotax, they will help you figure it out based on your unique situation.

I was somewhat happy when i figured out coin base APi was causing the oops error. But i when managed to import almost 5k transactions from brokerage but ran into the file size problem, i realized turbotax fixed the front end of allowing you to import but forgot to fix the back end to allow for bigger file size. I tried it in online, i tried it in desktop , Online will throw error, desktop will literally crash. So no use trying to figure out how to import the 7k transactions because they still either need to fix the file size or increase the api duration to be able to handle the larger amount of transactions for filing.

Best option is ask to speak to their tax expert once you start with a new account. That will help you to file given the limited time left. If not, request for additional time by filing extension , it is free within turbotax.

Good luck.

Oops! It appears there was a drop in our connection." comes up anytime I try to do anything on TurboTax. I have used multiple browsers, devices, and internet connections.

Here is a work around since there are two possibilities. One, there is a transaction limit, you may exceeding the 2,000 transaction mark. Second, On all returns, 1099-B Quick Entry Table Cost/Basis input is giving an error for values above 21,474,836.47.

Instead, you can manually type in a summary of one or all 1099-B forms. You can enter 4 lines and cover the form(s).

Enter the totals for each:

  • short term covered
  • short term non-covered
  • long term covered
  • long term non-covered

When you enter summary data only,  you are required to send a copy of your 1099B to the IRS. Once you submit your electronic copy, TurboTax prints out a cover letter and instructions on where to send a copy of your 1099B.

@AmyC Yes, this is what I did last year when I filed, the problem is since this failed import attempt I cannot get anywhere in my account, I get this error every time I attempt to go in now.  Im hoping to find someone who may be able to clear out this data so I can just start the 2021 return fresh

So is there some way to escalate this?  There is just 2 days left to file and my account is still corrupted.  The support channels are useless, no the problem isnt on my end.  If I go through all the trouble of moving over to TaxAct Im never coming back

I'm in the same boat.  I've spoken to 6-7 specialists and they all just go through their troubleshooting checklist.  I've tried 4-5 different browsers, 3 different computer, 3 different ISP's.  I've cleared cache/cookies, reset computers and routers.  It definitely a problem on TurboTax's side.  I've been told a few different responses:

1. Can't fix it

2. Upgrade to the live help to have someone do your taxes for you

3. Wait 24 hours

If I can't get this fixed today, I'll be moving over to TacAct or H&R.  Been with Turbotax for years and never had an issue, but spending hours trying to fix this issue has been a nightmare with no solution.

Hey @awong805 I gave the TurboTax phone support one more try yesteday then decided to move to TaxAct, I was done and filed within a few hours yesteday (the returns were actually accepted by the irs in like under an hour too which was a surprise) , they actually had a few technical issues yesterday from a lot of traffic on their servers but it came back up and was overall a pretty good experience, I recommend trying them out and you will be able to get it done without filing an extension... oh it costs less too 😋

If I had the contact info for the DM or CEO I would contact them.  I have been trying for 2 weeks and all the same suggestions that have already been tried to no avail.  I am fixing to discourage anyone including my family from using this garbage product.  I am connected to the internet on their own site and get a consistent message to make sure you are connected to the internet.  If I was not connected to the internet I would not be able to get onto their site.  I am so upset with this company and no one cares to fix it.  I also get a constant comment from the customer service that my account is blocked.  It has been confirmed the account is not blocked or locked.  I should not have to create a new account and re enter all my information not knowing if it will file or not.  Beyond duscusted with all the stupid excuses.
