I’m requesting a full refund of $143 for my April 9, 2025 TurboTax Online payment, as the product doesn't support Form 1040-NR required for non-resident aliens.

I am a non-resident alien (NRA) and recently discovered that TurboTax does not support Form 1040-NR, which is required for my tax status. However, the software allowed me to complete and pay for a return that is not valid for non-residents. I believe this is misleading and has caused me to file an incorrect tax return. Per the TurboTax Satisfaction Guarantee, I am requesting a full refund of the $143 charge, as the product did not meet my needs and was not suitable for my tax situation.

TurboTax guarantees accurate calculations so if they make an error, they will pay you the penalty and interest but limitations apply.  For more information, review the Intuit Terms Of Service For TurboTax Online Tax Preparation Services

Refer to the TurboTax article How do I submit a claim under the TurboTax 100% Accurate Calculation Guarantee or 100% Accurate, Exp... for information.

Thank you for your response. However, I must emphasize that the issue here is not an IRS error or miscalculation, but that TurboTax misled me as a non-resident alien (NRA) into using a product that is not designed to support Form 1040-NR, which is the required form for my tax status.

TurboTax allowed me to complete and pay for a return that is invalid for my residency status. This is not a simple technical error — it is a fundamental product suitability issue. I was not properly warned or blocked from continuing, even though TurboTax clearly does not support non-resident filings. As a result, I unknowingly filed an incorrect return and am now facing a highly stressful situation with potentially serious consequences.

I respectfully ask: why must I wait for the IRS to respond before TurboTax acknowledges this as a refund-eligible situation? The error occurred at the point of product selection and usage — not due to an IRS notice.

This experience has already wasted a significant amount of my time, caused considerable stress, and already  required professional amending of my tax return.

I am requesting a full refund of $143, in accordance with the TurboTax Satisfaction Guarantee.

Please escalate this matter if necessary. I would greatly appreciate a prompt resolution.

I contacted customer service this Monday, but the issue remains unresolved. I am formally demanding a full refund of $143 for my April 9, 2025 TurboTax Online payment.

TurboTax’s system misled me into filing the incorrect tax form — Form 1040 — instead of the required Form 1040NR. This is a serious and unacceptable error, especially for a platform that claims to guide users through accurate tax filing. As a result of this mistake, I am now exposed to potential penalties from the IRS, which has caused me significant distress and concern about my legal and financial standing.

This failure on TurboTax’s part constitutes a breach of trust and service. I am holding your company accountable and insist on a full refund of the $143 service fee without delay.

No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue.  If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help.  Do not use the word “refund.”

At the end of April, I was dismayed to realize that TurboTax had guided me to file Form 1040 instead of the correct Form 1040NR for my visa status. Unfortunately, by the time I discovered this serious mistake, the tax filing deadline had already passed. I also found that I was unable to correct the issue within TurboTax before receiving my refund, which left me feeling extremely anxious and powerless. Fearing long-term consequences with the IRS, I had no choice but to consult independent attorneys and pay for professional legal services to prepare and submit an amended return. This experience caused significant stress and financial burden. Given that the error stemmed from TurboTax’s system, I respectfully request a full refund of the $143 service fee I paid for the filing.
