I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

After trying many of the steps outlined in the other posts with no success, the TT support person (AnneMarie) had me manually delete all of the prior installations with the following instructions.  It appears that an auto uninstall does not remove a problem file to allow you to do a new installation like the install on new machines that has worked for other people.   Make sure that you antivirus and firewall are turned off as well (but restart them as soon as you are done with the installation).

Forcefully uninstall and reinstall TurboTax

Sometimes, uninstalling TurboTax via the usual methoddoesn't completely remove the program.

In those instances, you can forcefully uninstall TurboTax to ensure all TurboTax files are removed.

Solution
  1. Browse to the following location on your hard drive: C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Intuit/TurboTax/TY19/PER/MSI (replace XXwith the 2-digit tax year of the TurboTax program you want to uninstall, for example 18 represents TurboTax 2018).
  2. Right-click each file in this folder and select Uninstall.
  3. Delete the following directories (where XX is the 2-digit tax year of the program you've just uninstalled):
    • For Windows 10/ 8 / 7 / Vista 64-Bit
      • C:/Program Filesx86/Common Files/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Program Filesx86/TurboTaxTYXX
      • C:/Users/[Your username/]AppData/Roaming/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Program/Data/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
    • For Windows 10/ 8 / 7 / Vista 32-Bit
      • C:/Program Files/Common Files/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Program Files/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Users/[Your username]/AppData/Roaming/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Program/Data/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
    • For Windows XP
      • C:/Program Files/Common Files/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Program Files/TurboTax/[version] /20XX – replace [version] with Basic, Deluxe, etc.
      • C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
      • C:/Documents and Settings/[Your username]/Application Data/Intuit/TurboTax/TYXX
  4. When finished, restart your computer, and then install TurboTax.

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

Here is my story... I installed TurboTax Deluxe 2019 in May, entered by license code and it worked.  I started my taxes without issue.  Then I started TurboTax Deluxe 2019 in July.  It updated and asked me for my license code again.  I reentered the same license code and got the dreaded Error 630.  I tried to uninstall, reinstall and it didn't work.  But finally, through another useful forum post, I tried a series of steps and think this is what worked for me:

I solved the problem this way:

I uninstalled TurboTax 2019 (via Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall)

I opened File Explorer:  I went to c:\users\myname

I went to the View menu and deselected "Hidden Items" (so that I could see the AppData subdirectory)

I went to C:\Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\TurboTax

I renamed TY19 to TYXX

I rebooted

I reinstalled TurboTax 2019 Deluxe

I entered the licence code and it worked.

Maybe I didn't have to uninstalled and reinstall TurboTax.  I suggest you just try to rename the C:\Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\TurboTax\TY19 directory first and see if that works.

If so, please post for all the other unhappy and frustrated TurboTax 2019 users!

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

I had 2019 installed on my Dell system.  I unfortunately was victim to the Windows 10 update that puts your system into a perpetual boot cycle.  I reinstalled the software on my NEW computer.  It worked for a week I was able to do my taxes for the second time this year and when I went to send it two days later it asked me to reinstall my access code.  upon doing so I was locked out with the error code 630.  I uninstalled and reinstalled did this multiple times and restarted computer in between.  I used the contact prompts and talked to an individual this morning WHILE I WAS AT WORK.  I was given a new "purchase" and access code that I accessed through a sent email from the representative.   When I got home to try to install it.  I followed the download link to my computer and used the given access code on the computer and am still getting the error 630 with the new product given to me from intuit.  I can't believe that even the new code given doesn't work.  I work in a pharmacy for 10 hours a day and have no access to my computer.   I have never had any problems using this software in 12 years.  TurboTax and It's deductible have been my goto.  Now I need to file and im locked out by your software. .. and I have to try to figure out how to fix this from a pharmacy and not at home because your hours are only avail during my operating hours.

I wonder if the IRS will be as understanding to me if I say. "well I have it already to send but intuit wont let me?"

and now I have to wait for another day

Sorry you're having trouble.   This is mainly a user community forum, not a direct route to TurboTax Support.   TurboTax Support is currently open 16 hours every day including this coming weekend.   Hours 5AM-9PM Pacific (8AM-12 Midnight Eastern.)

We are mostly fellow users here.   Before installing your new instance of the software, did you do a routine uninstall, or did you perform a forceful uninstall of your previous product?   A forceful uninstall should remove any remnants that a routine uninstall doesn't.  Here's how:

This is NOT a fix. Whoever thinks this is a fix is lucky this worked for them seeing as how NOTHING was mentioned that fixes anything. July 15 is in two days. My taxes are done. I would LIKE to file my taxes today.....

@recook0769

Also, I have seen 2-3 anecdotal reports from users who said they had the problem whenever they launched TurboTax while an external drive was present.   If they disconnected the external drive first, the problem didn't occur.   So it's something easy to try.  Do you happen to have any external drives connected when you get this error?

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

I finally resolved this problem on my MAC by following the uninstall and reinstall guidance at the following web page:

     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/installing/help/remove-uninstall-turbotax-for-mac/00/26050

This guidance removes all traces of older versions of TurboTax from the library directories on your computer. I found files from every version of the software going back to 2012 when I purchased my last MAC.

Prior to entering the activation code, I also disabled my virus protection software and the firewalls on my computer and DSL modem.

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

I did not. It required a person with customer service send me a new download and activation. I had to completely download a new program and activate it.

Now, months later, I need to access my returns from 2019 in order to fill out a FAFSA form for my college-age children and I bet you can't guess what's happening! You're right if you said it was forcing me to enter an activation code that doesn't work......

You can access your prior year returns using the Documents tab in the navigation.

  • When you sign in, make sure you're using the same TurboTax account (with the same username) as in prior years.
  • Select Documents from the navigation when it appears.
  • Use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to choose the tax year you want and then select Download PDF.

If you filed your 2018 taxes with TurboTax and would like to receive a copy to complete this year's tax return, please click, How do I access a prior year return? to learn more.

If all else fails, you can request a Transcript of the tax years you need and use the information from there for the Fasfa.  It is quick and secure.

Taxpayers should keep copies of their tax returns for at least three years. Those who need a copy of their tax return should check with their software provider or tax preparer. Prior year tax returns are available from IRS for a fee.

For those that need tax transcripts, however, IRS can help. Transcripts are free.

To get a transcript, people can:

  • Order online. Use the ‘Get Transcript ’ tool available on IRS.gov. There is a link to it under the red TOOLS bar on the front page. Those who use it must authenticate their identity using the Secure Access process.
  • Order by phone. The number to call is 800-908-9946.
  • Order by mail.  Complete and send either Form 4506-T or Form 4506T-EZ to the IRS to get one by mail. Use Form 4506-T to request other tax records: tax account transcript, record of account, wage and income and verification of non-filing. These forms are available on the Forms & Pubs page on IRS.gov

Those who need an actual copy of a tax return can get one for the current tax year and as far back as six years. The fee per copy is $50. Complete and mail Form 4506 to request a copy of a tax return.

@ Cynthiad66   User recook0769  is referring to the desktop software, not Online TurboTax.  Any desktop returns will not be in an online account.   But the tax return transcript you mentioned would be helpful if ultimately needed.

@ recook0769

Do I assume correctly that you didn't save a PDF of your 2019 desktop return?    For future reference, saving a PDF each year in a safe secure location makes it easy to view a return without having to use the TurboTax program.

Has your system configuration changed any since you last used the 2019 software?   The software remembers a "fingerprint" of the computer it was installed on.   See if the following info is helpful.  While it's anecdotal, several users have said the blame was a USB device in their circumstance.

If you have a USB drive/device plugged into a USB port at the same time you are launching TurboTax, then remove the USB drive/device. Then try launching the TurboTax program again. See if that solves the problem.

Or try it the other way around. i.e., if you had a USB device plugged in initially when you installed TurboTax originally, but don't now, then plug it back in and try.

Otherwise, please contact the folks at TurboTax Customer Service for assistance with your license code, or you can consider downloading a 2019 tax return transcript at the IRS website as Cynthiad66 mentioned.

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

So, only been using this program for decades...seems like intuit stumbles are making use of this program much more frustrating than necessary.  Activation code is not recognized for 2020 home and business

So is this during initial installation? Or did you previously have the product activated OK and were using it, and now you have re-launched TurboTax, and it's asking for the activation code again?

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

This is NOT the best answer!  I just spent 2-1/2 hours on the phone with customer service.  The final resolution... They are refunding my money because they can't get the software that once worked to work again.  I need to trash an almost complete return, buy another tax software, learn a new tax software, and start my return over!  I have never been so angry, and I am NEVER buying any intuit products again!!!

I keep getting error code 630 every time I try to use my activation code.

It's still happening on 10/15/2020 and beyond.  The customer service told me she didn't even have an answer on her computer.  A senior tech worked on it for hours.  Nothing.  They've offered me a refund!!!!!  How can I file my almost complete return with a refund?!?
