No,   While the software can be installed on different computers for creating different tax returns, a joint return is a single return that contains both  spouses information so it can only be done on a single computer (some computer systems have file sharing provisions that allow multiple users to share and modify a single file but that is a computer feature totally separate from TurboTax.)

Up to 5 computers that you own.  It violates the license agreement to installed it on someone else's  computer.

The TurboTax software can be installed on up to 5 computers that you personally own.  The license is valid for only the purchaser of the software, no one else.

Thanks.  What if I erase my PC more than 5 times, each time I need to reinstall TurboTax again, does it count "each time" it is reinstalled? or, it count the # of licenses on 5 different computers?  

in another way, can I install / reinstall on the same computer for more than 5 times?

Each time you enter the license code the software "phones home" and increments the count. Once it reached 5, more installs will be denied.

Can I install on my two PC's and use the free efile to 2 different states?  I have to efile to three states total, unfortunately.

You can install the Desktop program on up to 5 computers.  You only get 1 state download for free.  Are the other 2 states for the same return?  Sorry you have to buy the extra state programs.   Then also if you want to efile state it is another $20 to efile EACH state return including the first one.  Or you can print and mail state for free.

To do more than 1 state return for free you would have to use the Online Free Edition for both federal and state.  But that is only for very simple federal returns.  You can start an Online return now at

Is one of the states for New York?  You can efile NY for free from the Desktop program.

All the state returns you need to file must be in the same taxfile as the federal return  so trying to install the program on different computers to download a different state on each for free will not work.   Once a state has been associated with a license key then all the rest you need are an extra fee.

My laptop needs to be sent out for repair. If I install TT Premier 2021 on my current laptop and then send it to the shop, can I install TT Premier 2021 on my old laptop as well and work on the same return? Since I do not know how long it will take them to repair my laptop and my warranty is expiring soon. Thank you.

@plikakis01  You need to move your tax return too.  Are you on Windows?   Your tax return ends in .tax2021 and should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.   Or search for all files ending in .tax.

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to File-New Tax Return).

Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.

Can you download a copy on a Mac and on Windows?  In the past if you downloaded for Mac, they told me I could not download it for windows.

Can you download this to two computer with two different operating systems?  One Mac and one Windows.  In the past you had to only download to either one or the other and it would not allow both.
