How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

OK so basically the answer to this is saying anybody can claim your child for taxes  and the IRS won’t tell you? Then you have to go through a whole big process just to report fraudulence why isn’t the IRS paying more attention I really don’t understand this do they actually pay attention to people who claim taxes or what this is very disturbing to me like seriously The IRS is supposed to be a big giant place that observes many things and yet they can’t make sure that 70 claiming taxes for another person is legit what the hell dude

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

I efiled January 15th, and it got rejected ever since. <span;>Federal Reject Code R0000-902 I've been getting this code and I dont know why. No one else is supposed to claim me or my children

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

You will have to file your return by mail - once one of your dependent's SSNs is used on another return, the IRS will not accept an e-filed return from you.

If someone else claimed your dependent already, then your e-filed return will be rejected.  Print, sign and mail your own return which claims your dependent.

Mailed returns are processed differently by the IRS.  It will take some time (maybe even up to a year) but eventually the IRS will contact both parties and sort out who could rightfully claim the dependent.  The person who wrongfully claimed the dependent will face repayment of refund $, plus penalties.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

You can get an Identity Protection PIN for her so no one else will be able to get their tax return accepted by the IRS if they do not enter her IP PIN on their tax return.  Go to this IRS website to get an IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin

Or you can complete, print and mail the IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit to the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f14039.pdf

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

I'm trying to find out who was the person that claim my child.

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

@Shakira1 You cannot find out.  The IRS will not tell you.   But if your return is being rejected because someone else claimed your child, you cannot e-file. You have to print sign and mail your own return and let the IRS sort it out.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

Why the IRS not giving the person they tax refund when they claim a child? It been 2 months and they still not getting they refund?

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

It has not been two months... The IRS did not even begin to accept or process 2020 returns until February 12.  If you filed earlier then your return was just sitting on a server.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If accepted, they try to process it within three weeks but it can be longer.  if you have earned income credit or additional child tax credit, it will be at least the end of February before you see your refund, due to the PATH act that requires that they hold your refund longer.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

How do I find out if someone has used my dependent on their income taxes,

Sometimes there is a suffix (like 01 or 02 or 03) at the end of the rejection code the indicates which dependent it is referencing.   You should check the SSN for all 3 of them.  If you are entitled to claim all 3 dependents and one of their social security numbers has already been claimed, you are going to have to file by mail to claim all of them.   Once a social security number is claimed on a tax return, that SSN can not be used on another e-filed tax return.

The IRS will sort it out later.  If you know who claimed the dependent(s), you can let them know they will need to amend if you are qualified to claim them, but even if they do amend, you will still need to paper file in order to claim the dependents in question.  The IRS will process your return in the normal timeframe and include all of your dependents.

If you don't know who claimed them or the other party won't amend, the IRS will send notices to both of you (later).  The one who erroneously claimed the dependents will have to pay back any $$ amounts attributable to those dependents.   @Michelle1986

See this Help Article to clarify which dependents you can claim on your tax return.
