You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and mail it in. You will be needing to use a form called a 1040X, which becomes available in mid-February. You cannot e-file an amended return. They have to be mailed, and it takes at least 2-3 months for the IRS to process an amended return. Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

I filed my state taxes electronically 6 weeks ago and the status says that my state refund is still processing. I forgot to file my unemployment compensation
did they hit you up at a different time? are was it ok and they didn't contact you
@kimberly31 You are commenting on an old thread. Do you have a specific question or situation that we can help you with?
i don’t get this whole process. I also forgot to add my unemployment to my taxes and I already sent them in. My federal says accepted but my state is pending. Do I continue to wait or what?
Yeah my return was accepted so I guess I gotta wait until they send my refund. I wonder if they’ll adjust it or I’ll have to file an amended. Said they would accept returns until Feb 12 so I guess they started processing yesterday.
@Nathan828 If your return has been accepted, you are able to file an amendment to include your unemployment benefits. For steps on how to file an amended return please click the link below.

Once a tax return has been filed it cannot be changed, canceled or retrieved
You will have to wait for the IRS to start accepting or rejecting 2020 tax returns on February 12, 2021
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return originally completed and filed using the 2020 TurboTax online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-turbotax-online-return/01/27577
How could so many people "forget" to file their unemployment income?? I was researching unemployment income taxes and ran across so many people who "forgot" to include it in their tax filing.
You think people intentionally want to “forget” the taxes? What was the point in commenting clown lmao
So what happens if you have to amend a return?

The amend function will be available after Feb 24.
If you filed, it is like dropping it into the mail - you cannot get it back if accepted by the IRS or state.
Do not rush to amend - no hurry. You have 3 years to amend and amended returns are taking 6 months or longer to be processed so waiting a few weeks will make little difference and amending too soon might just compound the problem.
To amend your 2020 tax return:
-- First, *wait* to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or state. DO NOT do anything until you receive the accept or reject e-mail.
-- If rejected, you can correct and re-send your return.
-- If accepted you should *wait* until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or conformation that any tax due has been paid. (If you file an amended return while you first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time). In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment – a sticky process that can take a year or more).
-- Then you can start the amend process.
It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it. That is the only proof of mailing that the IRS will accept.
-- Amended returns can be mailed or e-filed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.
See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending:

You can check the status of your amended return here but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up:

So what happens if you amend then owe money? Does it come out of your next year's return?
