A 2020 tax return cannot be e-filed.  A 2020 amended return cannot be e-field.  The 2020 return or 2020 amended return can only be printed, signed, dated and mailed.  

Enter any date in 2020.

The 2021 Amendment Form 1040X is ready.

However, don't Amend a 2021 return until your original return is processed and you receive your refund.

An Amended Return does not 'catch up' with your original return and correct it.

Amended returns can take 12-16 weeks to process, even if Efiled.

I had similar issue just now. I e-filed my 2021 Fed 1040 earlier in March and it was accepted on 3/9/22. Today I e-filed my 2021 Fed 1040X and somehow the direct debit page showed up so I entered my bank information and e-filed my amended return.

 @DoninGA - I understand that any amount owed on an amended tax return cannot be paid using direct debit, however why did the direct debit page show up? Is this just a glitch because Turbotax's 1040X functionality is new? Can you please help confirm this? I'm reluctant to make payment by mailing 1040V and on IRS Direct Pay website because I don't want to end up double-paying the IRS :(

I have the Mac desktop version of TurboTax 2021. I e-filed the federal and state for 2021. I then e-filed another state and need to amend the first state. I figured out how to amend the state (which was nothing like the instructions on the link provided). However, I don't see any way to e-file the state. This is for Iowa, which allows e-filing state, according to TurboTax help.

When I go to the section to file returns, it just shows that all 3 returns have been filed and I don't see any options to e-file the amended Iowa return.

I found this help topic updated on 2/10 that says the functionality will be available.

Is this functionality implemented?

If so, how can I do this?

Also, printing the amended return only prints the main form without the supporting forms that should probably be included to show where the numbers are coming from. All of the forms appear in the PDF file when saving the return to PDF. If I were to file an amended paper return, it isn't clear which of these forms to send.

If I am unable to e-file, I'd like to know which forms to send to file the amended Iowa return.

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Pay any taxes owed from the amended return when you file the amended tax return.

The amended form is ready but Turbo Tax won't e-file it and I don't understand why. Today is April 20, 2021.

After calling in 3 times and none of the support could figure out how to file an amended state return using the Mac software, over an hour for each call, it was escalated to another tier of support. That person told me that I am unable to file an amended state return in Iowa. He instructed me on how to print out the forms that I need to amend the state return. One of the forms was en e-file form that was filled out. I mailed the forms.

It would've been nice if TurboTax software would indicate this.

It would've been even better if TurboTax would've let me know to file for the other state return, which is why I needed to amend the return in the first place.

I also amended my 2021 tax return via TurboTax and the direct debit page appeared which I used.

It looks like you can use direct debit when amending a tax return via turbotax.

Turbotax experts - can you please confirm this is accurate information?
