If I purchased software can I still use TurboTax online without paying twice?

I was filling out the online tax info.  Had to leave for a day and returned the next day.  A pop up appeared to buy online the premium version.  I did this and downloaded it.   Now I have to either completely fill out the desktop version from scratch, or pay again for the online version that is completed.   Really upset about this and can not find a way to transfer the data from one to the other.

If I purchased software can I still use TurboTax online without paying twice?

@ericisb123  I don't understand why you had to buy the Desktop program?  Did you want to?

You can move your Online file to the Desktop program and continue without paying for Online or needing to reenter your info.

To continue in the desktop version see this…….

Download the .tax2021 file for free

How do I save my TurboTax Online return as a tax data file?

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).

But I would also call in and complain.  Never heard of it asking you to switch to the Desktop program.   What were you trying to enter?  Do you want to file federal joint but state separately? The Desktop program is better for that.

It sounds like the online version has limitations that will preclude me from using it.  If I used online last year, how do I get my last year's return information into the downloaded version this year?

You should be able to download the .tax2020 file from Online.  See this to download the .tax data file, the second section on how to get the data file from the prior year.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/saving/help/how-do-i-save-my-turbotax-online-return-as-a-tax-data-...

One way is to start a 2021 Online return and transfer into that.  Then you can download the .tax2021 file from online and just OPEN it in the Desktop program.

OR

If you used the online version last year and need to transfer your info to this year's Desktop version there are 2 ways depending on what you have.

1.  If you saved the actual .tax2020 file (not just the pdf file) to your computer before online was shut down in Oct. then start a new return  and the very first thing you do is Transfer from .tax file.  You can only transfer at the very beginning.  You should be able to download the .tax2020 file from Online.  See this to download the .tax data file, the second section on how to get the data file from the prior year.

2.  If you didn't save the .tax  file to your computer or lost it,  there is a way to do it by starting a 2021 return in the Online version, transfer to that and then continue in the desktop version.  You won't have to pay for Online.

First transfer into the Online version

Then to switch to the Desktop program

Here's how to transfer last year's return to Windows…..

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download .tax file

You are correct. The on line version of TT is not the same as desktop version and has less functionality. No professional tax software company makes several versions with different functionality for CPA firms. Consumers deserve the same level of professional functionality. It is unbelievable the returns I review that are wrong because a basic software was used and there was no flag to indicate something was missing.

Never use on line version and never use the basic TT. TT should make only one come let’s version of tax software. Development costs would decrease 4 fold and a complete professional tax software would be available at a lower price point.

"If that's your situation, we can tell you how to download the *.tax2019 data file you prepared online and finish and file it in your desktop software"

@mesquitebean

How do I do what is stated above?

I bought the Desktop version... Couldn't figure out how to import the data file from the previous year that I used the Online version.

I started the 2022 online...

Would be cool if I can just import that data into the Desktop version I bought locally.

Or if I could import last years information instead of importing all the data again.

The current return you started online is a 2021 return.   Last year did you use Online TurboTax for your 2020 return in that same account?   If so, the 2020 info from last year's online return should have transferred into the 2021 Online return when you first started it this year (IF you are in the same account.)   Did that transfer of the 2020 data occur successfully in the online product?

You mentioned 2 different scenarios, and there are indeed 2 possible approaches, and I'm not sure which one you want to do.   They're done differently, and one requires starting over.  Here are the 2 options, and I'll also provide the steps below for the one I think you want.

  • OPTION ONE:   Do you want to download the current 2021 Online data file you already started and move it to your 2021 desktop software to finish it without starting over?   If so, did the online 2020 data already transfer into your 2021 Online return when you started it, and you just need to continue the return in the desktop version?
  • OPTION TWO:  Or do you want to download last year's *.2020 tax data file from your Online account and start a new 2021 return from scratch in the desktop software and transfer the *.tax2020 data file into it at the beginning?

I'll go ahead and take a guess with Option One.  My odds are 50-50.  😁

If you already have the 2020 data now in your 2021 online return, here's the method for the first option above, which doesn't require starting over.  If you want the second option (starting over and doing the 2020 transfer from scratch), you'll have to report back.

If your online 2021 return already has the 2020 data transferred into it, then here's how to download the *.tax2021 data file and continue it in the 2021 desktop software without starting over:

  • With your online return open, go to the left menu column and click on TAX TOOLS and then TOOLS.
  • In the Tools Center pop-up, select "Save your 2021 return to your computer."
  • The file will likely download with the name taxReturn.tax2021.
  • You can rename the default filename to something more recognizable, for example JohnDoeTaxReturn.tax2021.   Just make sure you don't change the filename extension to the right of the dot; it has to end in *.tax2021.
  • That file can now be opened in your desktop software (see note.)  I don't know if you're using the Windows version or Mac.

NOTE:  If you've already been preparing a state return Online, then that data file will have some data for the state return in it, too.   If so, you'll need to download the state program into your desktop software before opening the file, or it will give you an error notice.    To do that, you may have to start a temporary dummy desktop return just long enough to download the state program.   You can later delete that temporary dummy return.

@mesquitebean

Option 1

The Tax Tools/Tools option was kind of hidden …

I got the file exported…

but I couldn’t just load the file into TurboTax through the GUI in the app. It doesn’t find the file unless you change the selection to “All Files”

I had to close the app and open the 2021 tax file, which then opens the app and starts the update for the First State return. But, since I have two State returns… the import fails.

I then had to close the app and open the file again to load the Second State forms.

But I’m good for now!

Thanks for the reply!

You're welcome.  I'm glad you got the file.   I'm not sure why you had that trouble you described above.

Sometime people do have to either re-launch TurboTax or even reboot (restart) their computers after downloading state software for it to take effect.   But that problem you had opening the file is not what I normally see in the Windows version.  In Windows version, when you chose "Open Tax Return", the default file extension it looks for is *.tax2021.   I'm not sure why it took the selection "All Files" to see the correct file.  I'm wondering if you might be using a Mac, which may open the file differently.    If you are using Windows, are your Explorer options set to show file extensions in the file directories?  Some people have it configured not to show file extensions.

In any case, I'm glad you got the file.  Good luck.

This should mentioned to a disk buyer  before one makes a purchase?

@jd19391 You are posting to a thread that has no activity for about a year.  What did you not know about the CD/download you were purchasing that you think should have been mentioned?

Turbo Tax will not install on my PC. Does that mean I have to pay twice for it? It seems like a bad business
