Did you already e-file? What do you think you did wrong? if you e-filed, do not try to change it yet. Post back here with details so we can help.
I don’t understand why I am getting almost $12,000 back, I must have done something wrong along the way. I did get my 3rd stimulus check and I think when I clicked off TurboTax to check my bank account to make sure I got it, TurboTax put in itself that I did not receive it. When I went to click back on TurboTax to answer that I did receive it, the question was gone and had already moved me forward.
Look at your Form 1040. Is there an amount on line 30?
PREVIEW 1040

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
If you are getting a lot more than you are expecting, then walk back through all of your entries. Pay special attention to your W2 taxes withheld on box 2,4 and 6. Also, look at any other forms that you entered taxes withheld.
If you have $0 entered for the 3rd stimulus, you will just need to go back to the Federal Review section and change your answer. However, this is only a $1,400 difference.
You can also look at your 1040 to figure out where the refund is coming from., line 28 will be the amount you are getting for the child tax credit. If you did not receive any advance payments.
Line 32 is your refundable credits which includes your Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Dependent Care Credit and a few other refundable credits from Schedule 3.
Line 33 of your 1040 are your total payments. This is NOT a refund amount, this is the sum of what you had withheld from your paychecks and all of your credits, some credits are refundable others are not.
Line 34 is the amount of your refund. This is how much you paid in, plus your credits minus your tax liability.
Looking at lines 16-34 should explain your refund amount. If there is something that doesn't look right, then you can go back to that section and change it.
You can see your 1040 using forms mode in TurboTax Desktop or if you are using TurboTax online by clicking the following:
Hello! I also think I did something wrong.
I just e-filed and then a few days later received Letter 6475.
It doesn’t match what I can see on line 30. I think I reported what was in my bank account. I’m not sure what to do.
Any expertise would be helpful!
It should not match line 30. Line 30 is for any more you qualify for. The 3rd Stimulus payment is 1,400 for everyone listed on your 2021 tax return. You enter the amount you got during the year to see if you qualify for more.
Hello,
i submitted my tax return with my w2 from the job i worked from january to july of 2021. From july 2021 to january 2022 i worked another job and have just received the other w2. How do i correct this? Thanks
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
You should not amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.
The 2021 1040X amended return won't be ready until March 17, 2022.
How to Amend
I think i put no for the 2,800 money for stimulus and i didnt have the EIN number for my grandson college
Yes i have already efile
The IRS will correct incorrect stimulus amounts @antwoinet02. Incorrect amounts will delay the processing of your return.
The IRS will reject any education credit claimed without an EIN number. If you later receive Form 1098-T you can file an amended tax return to claim the education credit.
Instructions for amending your 2021 return will be available at How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed. If you do not see 2021, it means 2021 is not ready to be amended in TurboTax. The amend process will be available later in February.
The section for 8889 HSA is incorrect
What is incorrect about your Form 8889? To review this section in TurboTax, search for hsa and use the Jump to hsa link to get back there. Provide some details if you are having an issue and use this link to start a new thread - more eyes will see your question!
File Form 8889 to:
In most cases, your HSA contribution is reported in box 12 of your W-2 with the code W (Company Contributions to Health Savings Account). You don't enter these again in the HSA section; TurboTax will handle these when you enter your W-2.
Tip: Code W actually reports the combined contribution – yours plus your employer's. So if you contributed $1,500 to your HSA and your employer matched it dollar for dollar, box 12 on your W-2 would show $3,000 with a code W.
Why am I showing an excess HSA contribution in 2021?
