To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
Hi ,
My name is Yiuman .I used the 2021 Premier Turbo Tax software to prepare my 2021 federal and NYS tax return and I filed a extension on 4/18/22 for both my federal and NYS return. I saved my file on 4/18/22 on my computer. I did an updated on the 2021 Turbo tax software on 9/29/22 . Then I clicked on my 2021 Tax file and I found out my 2021 federal and NYS return file were not in my Turbo Tax file. Is there a way to recover my 2021 tax file? Please help me .
Thank you.
Yiuman
I bought and used a Turbotax Deluxe CD for 2021
The only way to delete the tax file on a Windows PC is to go into the Turbotax folder in your documents directory and deleted it. it then goes to your recycle bin. That's where it will be unless you emptied the bin. it will have an extension of .tax2021. if it's there highlight it and then click restore. if it's not there then go back to the same documents folder and see if there's a file starting with a ~ with the same extension. that's a backup. you can change the name but not the extension. if that's gone too, your out of luck. Turbotax does not have copies of returns prepared with desktop app.
I have the desktop version of Turbotax 2021 and have filed my returns every year using prior versions. For some reason when I open turbotax (even though I filed the return and got my refund) I cannot find the 2021 return. I also did my daughter's return and it is there but I cannot find mine. I searched my entire computer and my backup drive and cannot find. Would there be any record in the cloud?
@nfa1jxb No your tax return is not stored online anywhere if you used the desktop software. It is only stored on your own hard drive or any back up device you used. Search your hard drive for the tax file, or pay the IRS to get a copy of the return.

You can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

I filed me 2021 taxes and printed a copy. Somehow I deleted the file.
HELP
@Bennybenbenben Did you use online TurboTax software or did you use the CD/download? If you used the CD/download then the tax file is only stored on your own hard drive; it is not stored online.
If you cannot recover the file due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

@unc13608 Your question is unclear. Are you trying to recover the tax file? Or the software program?
Assuming you mean the tax file:
If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive. They are not stored online. If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

I USED TURBO TAX PREMIER WHICH WAS INSTALLED ON MY PERRSONAL COMPUTER.
I SINCE GOT A NEW COMPUTER. HOW CAN I RECOVER MY 2021 TAX RETURN
