Checking refund status

Double check your state efile status here.  Maybe only your Federal was Accepted.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup

When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc.  what does it say?

Check for a state refund  https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/refund-status/help/how-do-i-track-my-state-refund/00/25571

Make sure you are using the refund amount from your actual state tax return and not the combined amount Turbo Tax showed you at the end.  That was for federal and state combined.

Verify that the state tax return was accepted by the state -

To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product.

If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns or cope with staff shortages after Covid, etc.

Of course, you first need to be sure it was successfully filed.  Here's how:

If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted.  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account.

Or did you choose to file by mail instead?  TurboTax does not mail it for you.  If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it.

The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund and has a link for your state.

TIP:   While you're at your state's tax website, also look for a statement or FAQ that may say about how long it takes to get a refund in your state.   Many states have such information on their websites.

My refund was turned down

Checking refund status

@George Scrima Please explain what you mean by "turned down."   Do you mean your e-file was rejected?   Or do you mean the IRS said you are not entitled to a tax refund?

I received a letter on April 25,2022 saying "We found an error on you 2021 form 1040SR which affects your return"

I've called several times stay on hold forever...with no results.

@George Scrima

TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your tax return, so no one at TT knows why your refund was less.

Sometimes we can make an educated guess as to the reason for your reduced refund if you mention specific amounts--for example if your refund was short by $1400 per person---it is likely to be a mix up regarding the 3rd EIP payment.    If you received the 3rd stimulus check of $1400 per person in 2021 then you got letter 6475 from the IRS about it.   You needed to enter the amount you received.   If you already received that money then line 30 on your Form 1040 should have been blank.

If it is short by $1800 or  $1500 or  a multiple of that amount  ---   maybe a mixup regarding the advance child tax credit payments. If you received monthly child tax credit payments of $250 or $300 per month between July and December of 2021, then you got letter 6419 from the IRS, and you were required to enter the amount of the advance payments.   Only the remaining amount of the CTC should have been on line 28 of your Form 1040.

The IRS knows how much they sent to you for the 3rd stimulus check and they know how much they sent for advance child tax credit payments.   If you answered something incorrectly on your tax return then the IRS made a correction that resulted in a reduced refund for you.

The IRS will send you a letter that explains why your refund was reduced.   Meanwhile it might help you to check your online IRS account.

You didn't say what kind of code, so I'll assume you are referring to the 6-digit email verification code required of some filers when efiling.

This is a public user Internet forum--a user community, not a direct route to TurboTax Support.  No one here can provide you the code from this forum.  Also, be advised that you should not post personal information like phone numbers and email addresses in this public forum, or you can attract attention from spammers and scammers.   It looks like the forum privacy filter protected you by removing your personal info.

If you can't get the 6-digit email verification code when efiling, be sure it's not ending up in your email's spam/junk folder.    Another option is to change the email address in your account profile.   The following FAQ tells you how to do that.

If your email address is not working, you can change the email address you want to use in your Intuit Account settings.   The Intuit Account tab is way down at the bottom of the left menu column.  This FAQ will tell you how to change the email address.
