How can I recover a deleted tax return?

My 2021 tax return was filed using the Turbo Tax download on my laptop. I don't have that computer anymore, is there a way I can pull in that information to use for filing 2022?

@boston207 No, not unless you saved the tax file on a flashdrive or some other back up device.

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.  They are not stored online.  If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

@frank simo  Did you use the Desktop CD/Download program or the Online version?  You need the file ending in .tax2021 or the pdf file.  Did you search your whole computer for the files?

If you can't get the side menus to open up to access the prior year..... You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2022 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2022. I had to go though about 12 screens.

If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online. So you need to make and keep your own backups.

Last year I mistakenly filled my son’s taxes with TurboTax online instead of using my downloaded account. Now I can’t recover it and TurboTax won’t allow us to sign into his account, telling us that his account is associated with another account.

@hmccloudjr1 You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2022 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

OK.... I finished my 22 Tax Return....  I could not file as one form from IRS needed to be updated.  Today I got a note that the form was ready to download.  I up[dated as directed.  When the computer returned to my tax form... My Tax Form Was Erased..... I'd have to re enter everything again!!!!  I've searched the computer for my form.  ZIP.  I had used the CD form to enter my taxes.  AND none of the turbo tax downloads would open my taxes.  They all begin at step ONE......  HELP:

If your return was deleted before saving, the return is lost and you will need to start the return over. @adolfo61cj

Using turbo tax on my desktop. trying to retrieve copies of my 2021 Personal and business returns. used Turbo tax  2021.
