2020 filed double my income

My daughter was freaking out that she had to pay this year. So I took a look at her Turbo Tax form and saw that her income was doubled.

Any date on when this will be fixed?

Thank you,

Suzanne

I'M GOING TO POST IN CAPS SO PEOPLE WILL READ THIS.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SENT IN YOUR TAXES THEN YOU HAVE TO DO AN AMEND FORM.

BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T....THEN START A NEW TAX RETURN AND DON'T USE IMPORT W2'S.

MANUALLY ENTER YOUR W2'S.

THAT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM.

Please double-check to ensure a W2 wasn't accidentally entered twice.  Please see the Help Article here for inputting W2s.

If this has been confirmed, please reach out here for the next steps.

No, I did not enter it twice.

It is possible that the W-2 was transferred over from a previous year and a 2nd W-2 was also entered.    You can quickly tell if this happened by searching for w-2 in TurboTax (once you have the return opened) and using the Jump to W-2 link.   You will see the W-2 summary which will list all W-2s on your tax return.   If you have two from the same employer, with the same amount, you will need to delete one of those W-2 and then ensure the other one is correct and complete.   Then you can proceed through the amending process.

Form 1040X is ready to use.   When you sign in to TurboTax, you can now select the AMEND option at the bottom of the Tax Home page (under Your tax returns and documents).

Have you read the rest of the comments here? Several people have the same issue. It is a 'bug' in the software.

That would be great except there wasn't a selection to choose relative to my issue. The closest one didn't help at all. Part of the problem is now fixed however, the total at the end is doubled. I'll wait a few days to see if that gets fixed.

I got a notice from the irs stating I owed them money instead of getting a return for this very reason. I called customer support and got blown off saying that it was my fault because I clicked the recovery rebate box. It wasn’t until filing for this year that I realized my income was filed as double what it actually was. I’ve tried to do an amended return, but as all the info stayed the same, nothing is changed and the error still exists showing double my income. This has been a big problem for me and the IRS waited until the end of the year to inform me that I owed them and started charging interest on the amount. Please tell me how I can have this serious issue fixed. It is ultimately my fault, as I have used the service for years, have had no prior issues, and everything matched up when I submitted. It is however bothersome that customer support brushed me off so quickly and didn’t see the mistake after reviewing my return, especially since this is supposed to be a guaranteed service.

First, do not file an amended return.  Since the IRS made an adjustment on your return you can get this corrected directly with interaction with the IRS.  TurboTax is not involved in the processing of the return once it has been accepted by the IRS, therefore we can not assist with your issue.  Privacy Laws prevent IRS from sharing information  with TurboTax.

However, IRS should send a Notice of Adjustment to you in a few days.  When you receive that notice, it will have contact information in the upper right corner.  Use that information to reach out to the IRS to start discussion.  It is not all lost, you can present your case.

Thank you for using TurboTax

What type of income are you entering in the TurboTax program?  W-2 income?  Retirement/Pension income from a Form 1099-R?  Self-Employment income from a Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC?

You have to enter the income you received in the correct section of the program.

W-2 income in the section for a W-2.

Form 1099-R income in the section for Retirement Plans and Social Security.

Self-Employment income in the section for Self-Employment.  You do Not enter a 1099 for self-employment in the Other Common Income section for a Form 1099 and then enter the same Form 1099 in the section for Self-Employment.

Did you import any W2 or 1099?  Then you might have also manually entered it.  That can happen.  If you import a 1099 it may also import another 1099 you weren't expecting then you manually entered the other 1099.   What line on your 1040 is doubled?   Be sure to always review your return before you file.  Make sure you understand each line on your return.  If you don't then post questions.

Before filing,  You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

I entered it in as a W2’s. That’s the form I have. I went through the same process on H&R Block and I received a refund instead of owing. When I click on “Explain Amount” under the owed $11,443, it show my total income as exactly double what I actually made. It also says, “The (AMOUNT) you made at STATE OF MINNESOTA last year increases your taxable income by that same.” It also shows me owing $2,951 in State Taxes. I don’t file reciprocity because I work and live in the same state. So it’s definitely an error on your end. H&R Block is not doing this at all.

I checked, and nothing is showing up as a double entry.

Since you entered your W-2 form I would suggest that you look to see if there are two W-2s listed on the return or only one with the income doubled.  If there are two then you would need to amend the return and submit the amended return to the IRS. Here is the procedure for submitting an amended return. @Bkat
