What does it mean I’ve “registered” my taxes, therefore I can’t clear & start over?!...huh? (Sounds highly fishy to me)

Was supposed to be free... now somehow i owe 80$ to file. My return is the epitome of simple, but I seem to be cornered and can’t start over because of some arbitrary term stating that I’ve “registered”. I don’t get it?

You are posting from Deluxe  $40

State return $40

Refund processing to have fees deducted from federal refund by 3rd party bank $39.99 ($44.99 in CA) (This fee is optional and can be avoided by paying TT upfront using a credit/debit card)

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez

If you qualify to use it, there is another full-featured free version of the software:

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $39,000 or less, or $72,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

Note:  If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher in the paid versions of the software.

Online Deluxe $40  State software $40

Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free

I was in the same predicament, however I found a loop hole!

Simply go to tools --> Delete a Tax Document --> and start deleting all your tax documents.

Voila! Your numbers for both your Fed and State will eventually roll back to 0, and you can begin entering your information like you initally did!

This has always been an issue that I thought had no solution except to start a new account for that tax year.  I never thought about just deleting the documents and getting back to zero.  That is a genius solution to the issue that once you register you cannot clear and start over.

To delele go to Tools, Tax Tools, Delete a form and delete each form.

The original poster would still be in Deluxe but could contact support for a downgrade code.

"The original poster would still be in Deluxe "

Not so ingenious.

That’s why @taxlady28 mentioned someone in that particular situation would just need to reach out to customer service to get a downgrade code there sport.

Why would TurboTax Support give you a downgrade code if you are already registered for a higher version?

@cleatus232   You have been posting on very old posts from years ago.  Here's a couple links you should consider.  Why would you want to delete all the forms? It won't let you downgrade and you wouldn't be able to transfer from the prior year again.  Might as well set up a new account and start over.  Oh, I guess if you already paid and wanted to start over.

How to downgrade to a lower version.

To go back to a lower version or the Free Edition you can try to clear and start over if you haven't paid or registered
