I'm a programmer myself. There is no good reason why TT should be this slow!
Fire all the current "programmers" at TT.
STOP using TurboTax people!
It SUCKS!
It should just ask the user for a bunch of tax-related numbers and run them through a "calculator", a set of routines. Why should that take so long??????
I launch the NetBeans IDE 8.1 implemented in JAVA on my powerful PC. It takes 30 seconds to come up, with only a few tiny projects that I play around with.
As this doesn't appear to have an adequate answer...
It appears that TurboTax is scanning the entire Documents folder while starting up. Depending on the number of files you have here, this could take a very long time.
The TT program is a bit of a memory hog so closing other running programs usually helps and making sure the OS is up to date and run a defrag. Also the more information you enter into the return can also slow things up especially if you have hundreds of stock sales ... enter them last if you can.
Wow 79 seconds, try 46 minutes and counting.
Dear Intuit, this is a consistent problem with TurboTax in previous years. I could not recommend Turbotax to Anyone at this point.

I have installed desktop version of TurboTax Deluxe 2022. After launch, there is a screen with a a spinning starburst the expands/contracts labelled. “TurboTax 2022 - Activation”. It sits there for at least 30 minutes, and NEVER GETS ANY FARTHER.
Please see this Help Article which will assist you in troubleshooting this blank screen during the activation process.

That's not it. I am using my desktop.
There are a few issues stated within this thread. Can you please post specific details about the issue you're experiencing so that we can better assist you?
My time is worth something. So far one hour to get Turbo tax to "load" I thought I had already installed it. It should take seconds not hours. Now after it loaded it its been "updating" for 20 minutes and is 3% complete. When I work on my taxes do I need to fight for access to overloaded "servers?" If so Why?
I need answers or after some 20 years of Turbo tax I will go elsewhere next year,
Refer to the TurboTax Help articles Troubleshoot TurboTax for Windows downloading issues and Troubleshoot installation and running TurboTax for Windows to see if there are any helpful actions you haven’t tried yet.
ok
This question was posed in 2020. I just bought the brand-new download TurboTax 2024 H & B version in early November 2024 and find that it takes a good five (5) !!!!! minutes to fully launch. I love Turbo Tax, but kinda figured this would have been addressed a long time ago. I guess that should have waited a month to get going. Any Comments, Anybody?
I have been using TurboTax (TT) for only 3 years, before that 25+ years with TaxCut.
TT is exceptionally slow to launch, which is what the original post on this thread is about. It has gotten better over those years but still leaves room for improvement. Today it is about 10 seconds to load using a PC with an i5-11320H, 16M RAM, and a 512G SSD with a 300Mbps Fiber connection, with no data file.
The generic troubleshooting suggestions offered by Intuit employees are of no value. You should instead provide user feedback to your development team. Loading TurboTax should not take longer to load than excel (or TaxCut). If TT is going to its server to check for license validation, that should not be necessary to hold up a user session. If it checking for updates, that can be backround and presented later.
Another possible problem relates to the data file (---.tax2024). I did notice on my first use of TT that when I connected and downloaded tax information from banks and financial institutions, that the resulting data file was relatively large and load time was very slow. I checked some of the details and the tax information appeared to be transaction level. So, I deleted that file and started new, but instead of permitting TurboTax to download all my data, I entered it manually- not as transactions, but at a summary level which is all that the IRS needs. The file was then SIGNIFICANTLY faster for load. I don't know if this is still a problem. It does not take that much longer to enter the summary transactions, and I prefer the transaction level data not be anywhere that a third party can access. By the way, Tax cut also loaded significant detail when I chose to download financial tax info. But application load times were not impacted.
