Thank you, that was helpful. However, Line 4b is empty.
The information I entered is correct. There are only 2 lines I needed to enter from previous year 8915E (2020 Form 8915E, line 4, column b, and 2020 Form 8915E, line 17).
Do I need to answer "Yes" I received a 1099R and enter that information even though it was for the previous tax year?

If you did not receive a Form 1099-R in 2021 then you have to answer NO.
If you elected to spread the distribution over 3 years then then the boxes on the Form 8915-E on Lines 9 and 17 should not be checked.
I'm having a similar issue but my line 4b from my 1040 has an amount in it. If I'm understanding correctly, this is the 1/3 of my distribution. Where do I put this? If I go to the 1099-R section like the program is telling me to I'm not sure how to file it out? I also did not receive a 1099-R for 2021. Help please.

Asks if I received a Form 1099-R in 2021, answer No
Asks if I took a disaster distribution in prior year, answer Yes
Asks if I took a 2020 disaster distribution, Answer Yes
The Coronavirus distribution box is Checked
2020 Form 8915-E, line 4, column b has a 0
2020 Form 8915-E, line 9 has 1/3 of the amount distributed in 2020
I answered NO that I did not receive a 1099R in 2021 and line 9 and 17 are NOT checked on Form 8915-E. Turbuo Tax then asks, "Did you take a disaster distribution at anytime between 2018 and 2020?" "...Select YES if you need to report 1/3 of the amount of your distribution from a prior year."
The options are:
1) Yes, I took a disaster distribution for a disaster that occurred in 2020
2) Yes, I took a disaster distribution for a disaster that occurued in 2018 or 2019
3) No, I did not.
I CHOSE:
1) Yes, I took a disaster distribution for a disaster that occurred in 2020
And the message I received was, "You'll need to visit the Form 1099-R Retirement topic
Please visit the Retirement topic IRA, 401K. Pension Plan Withdrawals(1099R) in Wages & Income under the Federal Taxes section.
What am I supposed to do in that section if I did not receive a 1099-R for 2021??
Correct, they are not checked.
Here's what I answer:
Did you get a 1099-R in 2021? - NO
Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021? - YES
Did (taxpayer) take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution? - NO
Did (spouse) take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution? - YES
Total Qualified Disaster Distribution Reported in 2020:
If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here. (Box is checked)
2020 For 8915E, line 4, column b: $7,000
Qualified 2020 Disaster Distributions from Retirement Plans (Other Than IRAs): Empty
Qualified 2020 Disaster Distributions from Traditional, SEP, SIMPLE, and Roth IRAs:
2020 Form 8915E, line 17, if you checked the box on that line, enter 0 - empty
2020 Form 8915E, line 18 - empty
2020 Form 8915E, line 17 - $2,333
Did (spouse) repay any 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution in 2021? - NO
Did either of you take a disaster distribution in 2017, 2018, or 2019? - NO
That ends the questions and puts me back at the "Your Income" page. My refund amount doesn't change nor enters anything in line 4b of the 1040. I am subject to taxes on 1/3 ($2,333) of my 2020 distribution but it's not reflecting that.
@arob2402 You should have an amount on the 2020 Form 8915-E Line 9 which would be 1/3 of the amount on Line 8. This amount should be on your 2021 Form 8915-F on Line 12 if the distribution in 2020 was Not from an IRA
The distribution was from an IRA so Part II (lines 6-11) of the 2020 8915E are empty. Part III (lines 12-19) I have values in lines 15, 16, 17, and 19. Line 17 ($2,333) is 1/3 the amount of line 16 ($7,000). I don't have, nor see where to access, 2021 Form 8915-F.
@arob2402 If the 8915-E has an amount in Line 17 then the form 8915-F will have that amount on Line 27 and on Line 33. The amount from the Form 8915-F Line 33 will flow to the Form 1040 Line 4b.
I really appreciate your responses! I'm just curious why it's not showing on Form 1040 Line 4b. I've entered everything as described above and when I navigate to Tax Tools>Tools>View Tax Summary>Preview my 1040 Line 4b is empty. I would assume that should populate before I file. Maybe because the form was just released today there's a bug in the software.
So I'm trying to file my taxes I've followed everything I needed to enter for 8915-F by referring to 2020 1040/8915-E, but towards the end it's asking for Disaster name and FEMA Disaster number Form 8915E-T and can't file because of this please help
Enter the amount from line 17. Do not leave line 17 blank.
Turbotax here's what's confusing people on your update and questions for 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution. This should probably be updated and fixed.
Qualified 2020 Disaster Distributions From Traditional, SEP, SIMPLE, and ROTH IRA's
2020 Form 8915E, line 17, if you checked the box on that line, enter 0. (People are entering nothing here because the box was NOT checked, instructions should say to enter the amount from line 17 if box was not checked. It's just worded badly)
Then 2 lines later you are asking for Line 17 again ??
Thanks!
