@Beckyleo58 You say someone claimed you as a dependent without your permission. How did you find that out? Is it someone in your family? CAN you be claimed as someone else's dependent? If so, they do not need your permission. The IRS will not tell you who claimed you--so wondering how you know this.
If you already used the non-filer site for a stimulus check you will not be able to e-file a 2019 tax return. You can mail your tax return. Expect it to take a very long time to be processed.
If you used the IRS non-filer site to get a stimulus check, you will now get a “duplicate SSN” rejection. We are seeing people who did not notice or ignored the warning on that site about using it if they would be filing a tax return.
@xmasbaby0 I found out because I tried to sign up for the "where's my stimulus check" website and got an error message saying I could not sign up for it because "someone has already claimed you as a dependant"/ the only "person" I can think of that would do that is my estranged father. Before I cut him out of my life he had asked me hey what's your SSI #? When I asked him why he needed it he replied oh nevermind, I got it. And never would tell me why he wanted it. He's VERY possessive and views me as property. He's tried several times in the past to get me declared his dependant legally and I've fought him off each and every time.
He thinks I owe him a couple of million dollars for "raising me, and not just dumping me off in a nursing home like he should have when I got sick"He was highly offended when I chose to leave the house when I turned 16 and live with my grown sister. He's called the cops on me a couple of times claiming I was being held against my will and neglected. He's also called hrs, and other government agencies trying to get me declared his dependant even though I want nothing to do with him.
First for the 2019 return you must mail it in to get the refund you deserve. Next, the stimulus may or may not get paid to you this year due to the late date but you will be able to get the stimulus when you file the 2020 return next year.
Now ... mail in a form 14039 to report the misuse and have an IP PIN issued to you so that no one else can claim/use your SS# again to file a return. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/when-to-file-a-form-14039-identity-theft-affidavit
@Wolvie-1977 You do not say if you receive any taxable income. If you do, then when you file your own tax return you need to print sign and mail it. That way, the IRS will process the return. You and whoever claimed you will each receive letters and the IRS will sort out the problem. If someone who should not have claimed you did so, then they will face repayment of any credits they received for claiming you and penalties.
If you are over the age of 16, no one can receive stimulus money for claiming you. All they could get is a $500 credit for other dependents to reduce their own tax liability.
I am in the exact same situation. I contacted the IRS and was told to fill out a form 1040 and fill it out claiming myself as a dependent.
They said this would automatically start the dispute process.
@BIG GIRL CAROL That much is correct. But if someone claimed you and used your SSN for a tax return you will not be able to e-file. Your own Form 1040 must be printed, signed and mailed.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Remember that federal and state returns must be mailed separately to separate addresses.
@BIG GIRL CAROL And you don't actually "claim yourself as a dependent". You just file your own 1040 return and do not mark that someone else can claim you.
@Jake88smiles Did you use the non-filer site to get a stimulus check? If you did then you will now get a duplicate SSN error and you will not be able to e-file. Or if someone claimed you as a dependent, your SSN is in the system and you cannot e-file. In either situation, the only way for you to file now is to print sign and mail your return. The SSN rejection comes from the IRS and you cannot fix it.
If you used the non-filer site:

I have been tax exempt and not had to file taxes. I did NOT get a stimulus check but heard a member of my family claimed me. How can I get this taken care of? I never gave anyone permission. But need that money I am totally and permentally disabled!
It is too late to mail in a return for the stimulus this year ... it will never be processed in time. Instead you can file a 2020 return in January and tell the family member NOT to claim you next year.
Someone claimed me on there taxes without permission what do I do
The only option you have is to file a return by mail ... the IRS will sort out the situation in due time.
if its likely it was a parent, you probably should file form 14039 - identity theft affadavit
I'm having the same problem I don't file taxes I'm on SSI have been for the last 12yrs. I've not gave anyone permission to claim me on taxes and someone did claim me this year and caused me to loose out on the first stimulus what can I do bout this? I really need the help
