That didn’t work. It won’t let me delete any form for adoption. It’s very frustrating. All customer service told me, after 2 hrs, was delete and start over with a new account. I have already paid.
I’m trying to delete the adoption carryover form.
Which version of TurboTax are you using TurboTax Online or TurboTax for Desktop?
I am using the turbo tax online
What's the hold up with form 8839? I can't file until this issue gets fixed!
I am having the same problem. I can't start over because I have already paid. I have requested a refund but haven't heard from them.
Please see this Turbo Tax FAQ on the availability of IRS forms.
Federal Individual Form Availability
If it shows available, try deleting it and reentering it.
This Turbo Tax FAQ will show you how to delete a form.
@champagneBeadwork
Because the IRS hasn't released the form 8839. If you have a recently adopted child, you need to wait.
However, I do not have a recent adoption. Tried multiple times to delete the form, logged out, deleted cookies, allowed customer service to view my screen, repeated all the steps with 3 different CSRs and finally logged in on my phone, successfully deleted form 8839 and the adoption tax credit worksheet and submitted my taxes. I hope this helps someone else!
I have a carryover to use and Turbotax is generating an 8839 which then gives me the full tax credit for an adoption this year. I filled out the carryover form with the amount used each year, but it is still trying to give me the full amount for this year. (Turbotax has never calculated the carryover amount for me...) Do I need to delete the 8839?
Thanks!
If you indicated in the Adoption Credit interview that you had no expenses in 2021, that the adoption was completed in a prior year, and that you had prior year expenses, you should get a credit for only the Carryover Amount on your 2021 return, as you mention.
This will show on Schedule 3, Line 6c as well as Line 16 on Form 8839.
If you're using TurboTax Online, you could delete Form 8839, (and the worksheet), close TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies and step through the adoption interview again.
When I tested this, only the Carryover Amount was reported on Form 8839 and Schedule 3.
@HokieSuz
The 8839 is not listed among the documents but it won't let me finalize my taxes without filling out the adoption worksheet. Not sure how to proceed. I cleared the cache and cookies.
I also double checked all my answers that none of the children were adopted this year.
You need to delete the form or fill it out with all zeroes.
To Delete a form:
Tax forms are interconnected. While you are on this screen don’t start deleting forms you don’t recognize.
I had the same issue in 2020, 2021, and again this year. I have everything ready to file and it just keeps looping even after I delete the 8839 form. I contacted customer service in prior years to no avail. I usually end up paper filing to get around the issue. Turbo tax needs to fix this. It's not like they are unaware of the issue.
Sounds like you accidentally indicated one of your dependents was adopted which triggered the adoption credit ... so did you remove the child, log out, clear your cookies and reboot your computer yet? Then log into the account and before you put the child back in click on the REVIEW tab to see if the 8839 message is gone. Only then go back and add the child being very careful on your entires.
