Question

can't delete adopted child

I've looked through the forums and nothing seems to be able to answer my problem. I somehow wound up with "adoptive child" for 2019 even though my kids were adopted in 2014. When I go to adoptive child info, there's nothing under name, etc. when I go to delete with the little trash can, and click yes for "are you sure you want to delete this adoptive child?" and then click done it says' it's removed but then when I try to review my taxes prior to submitting, it takes me back to adoptive child worksheet which I don't think I need to do. I can't get past this one point.

Try deleting the Adoption Credit information.  See How to get out of the adoption credit?

I've done that about 6 times. It keeps popping back up when I go to review taxes before submitting.

I suggest you go to the adoption credit section and add a child for adoption. Then, go back and delete the entry. Sometimes this will clear everything out.

Do you have a carryforward of an unused adoption credit form 8839?   If so deleting the form will remove it permanently.  That form will not be functional until 3/3 ... I would wait if I had a credit to use up.  See the chart here:

I tried deleting all the adoption forms over and over again and they kept popping back up.

What WORKED is that I deleted the forms, logged out of Turbotax (by hitting the button on the bottom left of the screen), and then logged back in. The Adoption Credit line was gone after that.

I hope that works for ya'll!

    Hey there!

I have been assisting customers with this issue and we have found a solution that works for us. When under the deductions and credits portion of the interview  navigate to the adoption credit section. Enter in figures in the required fields to generate a form for TY21 as such:

Next you need to select that you had expenses in 2021 and finalization was in 2021. It will then give you a breakdown of you year over year carryovers that can be edited. Delete this number and make them zero so that a carryover worksheet is not generated.

You can now go to the Tools menu to delete a form.

Delete the Worksheet first and this should delete the 8839 and if not, delete it.

The return should be now clear of that error and you can proceed to e-file.

Because the IRS hasn't released the form 8839.  If you have a recently adopted child, you need to wait.

However, I do not have a recent adoption. Tried multiple times to delete the form, logged out, deleted cookies, allowed customer service to view my screen, repeated all the steps with 3 different CSRs and finally logged in on my phone, successfully deleted form 8839 and the adoption tax credit worksheet and submitted my taxes.  I hope this helps someone else!

I have a carryover to use and Turbotax is generating an 8839 which then gives me the full tax credit for an adoption this year.  I filled out the carryover form with the amount used each year, but it is still trying to give me the full amount for this year. (Turbotax has never calculated the carryover amount for me...)  Do I need to delete the 8839?

    Thanks!

If you indicated in the Adoption Credit interview that you had no expenses in 2021, that the adoption was completed in a prior year, and that you had prior year expenses, you should get a credit for only the Carryover Amount on your 2021 return, as you mention.

This will show on Schedule 3, Line 6c as well as Line 16 on Form 8839.

If you're using TurboTax Online, you could delete Form 8839, (and the worksheet), close TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies and step through the adoption interview again.

When I tested this, only the Carryover Amount was reported on Form 8839 and Schedule 3.
