using 2021 version getting update required during e-file

@mahvisions   I'm trying to follow your posts.  I don't understand your reason #1.   She gets a SSA-1099 from Social Security not a 1099R.   Why are you having federal withholding taken out of it?  If she only gets Social Security it is not taxable and she does not have to file except to get back the withholding.  So why have withholding taken out?    And you can't efile with only ss income.   So you will have to enter some taxable income like make up a fake 1099-INT for $1 so you can efile.

If she files a return or doesn't file one it will not affect your return at all.  You always can claim her as a dependent on your return. You never report her ss or SSDI on your return.

And....there has not been an "EZ" tax form for several years now.   Since the tax laws changed for 2018 and beyond, everyone files on a Form 1040.   Having tax withheld from Social Security in order to get a refund later just gives the government an interest-free loan all year if your only income is Social Security.    And that whole thing about the business being in your child's name sounds shady--not sure what you are trying to do that involves your child.

@VolvoGirl @xmasbaby0

The user already indicated...they like getting the tax refund in the "13th month"   so to speak.

Some taxpayers just like to have that refund at tax time.  If they learn to live on the monthly income during the year, the refund just gets to be like extra fun money at tax time.  No particular reason to talk them out of it, if that's what they really want.

@mahvisions   I'm posting my reply to your private message here too.

You are mistaken.   No you NEVER add her income to your return even if she doesn't file or if you claim her.  If the SSA-1099 has her ssn on it then it only goes on her return.  It will not put you into a higher tax bracket.  And you can still claim her as a dependent.

true, but the process i am filing is the exact same as was the EZ form.  Using the phrase was to helpp people understand why there is no concern of having to perform an updated return later.  Thank you for the correction.

would that be true if i just claimed her as a dependant on my return?

using 2021 version getting update required during e-file

Yes.  You do not report your dependent's income on your return.   You only report your income and spouse if married filing Joint.   You only report income that has your ssn on it.

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  If they only get ssi or SS, SSDI or a SSA-1099 they don't have to file a return and nobody reports it.
