I talked to tech support and they confirmed that they don't care about customers.
"You can not access 2020 software and earlier and there is nothing we can about it."
At minimum I would expect the company to at least allow you to open your old save files and export them to the raw forms so you could take the data somewhere else.
I have never encountered a company that simply refuses to allow customers to access their own data.
This would be a violation of data transport in GDPR in Europe from my understanding.
This feels a lot like a class action lawsuit to me...
Sorry you can’t install old programs. They only support the last 3 years. If you can’t download or open the pdf file and only have the data file ending in .tax20yy you could try the TaxPrinter service (not connected with Turbo Tax) to convert a .tax file to pdf at
I spend 90 mins on the line with TT support. Very nice person who was very helpful in getting this issue escalated through a number of other people/hoops to the "resolution desk". At every step to that point, the reflexive response was "TT only supports N years" of Desktop. It is frustrating to continually explain that I am not seeking support, I only want the program to run, as it did previously. (Mac user and like someone else on this thread, I have a new computer). And, btw, 2017, 2018, 2020.. all work no problem. In the end, they offered no solution. This is an absurd Intuit problem.
Yes, this is a complete FAILURE in integrity and caring by INTUITS execs. Freakin' rediculous. It's not even a money grab. It's just stupidity and uncaring about their customers.
JUST LET US RUN THE PROGRAM!!!!
We don't give a flying FU if you support it. "Because you guys don't give a FLYING FK about your customers. Why do you lock down a program after 3 yrs? I don't care if you support it, just let us open it!!!!!!! IRS can come after us for 10 yrs, but you lock down the program after 3 yrs. WE DONT CARE IF YOU "SUPPORT" IT. JUST LET US OPEN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I paid for this download.. Full price. I had to wipe my computer and I need to go back to finish some business in 2019. I cant open any of my saved files without having the right year installed. I want access to reinstalling what I have already paid for and this will not take the License code I was provided when I purchased this. I have used Turbo Tax for as long as I can remember there being software available from you for doing taxes. Fix this or I wont be back to use the software or services again and believe me, I will tell everyone I know to avoid your products and the lack of easy customer service to resolve problems. I don't care if I want to go back and install as far back as 1999 I paid for it. Fix this. This waste of time has given me a headache and without the resources I need to do what I need to do today. Until today I would have given turbo tax a very high review wherever and by whoever asked.
@JSMCCOY64 Don't worry, you don't have to be tech savvy to hack it. Just follow KRWTX's 12 steps on page 2 of this topic, and it should work like a charm. Just make sure you click on the right file names, as there are a lot of similar ones. It may seem daunting the first time you do it, but it is actually very straight forward. The color coding helps too. Besides, what is the worst that can happen, you accidentally brick some software that you already don't have access to? Oh, and someone else mentions it further down page 2, but you have to add an extra part to step 12, and disconnect your internet (turn off wifi most likely) before opening the modified TurboTax the first time. Then turn off the automatic updates via their modified 12th step, and you can turn your internet/wifi back on and you won't have to disable it in the future. I know it sounds like a lot of information if you aren't comfortable around computers, but honestly I bet it will take you less than 5 minutes end to end. Just take it one step at a time and you'll be fine.
I also did the same thing for TT Home & Business 2020 as well. The lines are a bit different, so you are no longer deleting lines 13-30, it is slightly off, but the rest of his instructions still work for 2020.
@Mel Indy I know it is frustrating as I just ran into the same issue. I needed to edit my 2021 taxes and wanted to view my 2019 return in TurboTax, but got locked out like you did. Have you tried KRWTX's 12 steps to override the activation on page 2 of this topic? It worked like a charm for me. I did the same thing to my 2020 copy as well, as I was running into the same issue there. Its like a 5 minute process and you only have to do it once, and going forward it should always work like it has in the past. I agree that Intuit should change their practices going forward, but I highly doubt they are going to change 2019, so you'll have to edit it yourself. It sounds intimidating if you've never coded before, but it is actually straight forward. What is the worst that can happen, you brick some software you already don't have access to? Even then you could just reinstall it if you still have the CD.
The only thing you have to look out for, is that if you use the 12 steps that KRWTX mentions, during step 12 you need to disable your internet before you open TurboTax for the first time after editing it, and then turn off automatic updates. It doesn't state that in the original 12 steps, but someone else commented on it further down on page 2 of this topic. Once you disable the automatic updates, you can turn your internet on again and it will function just like all the 2018 and earlier copies of TurboTax have in the past. Hopefully going forward they will see how many people are annoyed at this and they won't do the same thing for future years. Depending on circumstances, the IRS can go back up to 10 years to review your taxes, so disabling access after 3 just seems stupid.
It may work fine unless you are a Mac user. Then it's useless.
Thank you.
I'll have to give everything mentioned a try. It's too late for me to fix what I needed to. But I would like to know how to fix it if need be. Turbo tax ruined my day yesterday and I'm not feeling too much better now.
Unfortunately, I think they closed the loophole with the file modification steps posted earlier. I also get "there is an error in the log" "access denied" when trying to save module. If anyone has a work around for this, please post it.
The message posted in this thread does work for 2019 I struggle with this for years .... Now i can amend my taxes ....
Well done this works
