You will not be able to upgrade to the Plus edition for tax year 2018 since the TurboTax online editions for 2018 have closed to make way for the 2019 online editions.  Once the 2019 online editions become available in December, at that time you can start a 2019 return and upgrade to Plus.

Or contact TurboTax support during business hours and see if there are any other options available for accessing a prior year online tax return.

Support is open from 5am to 5pm Pacific time, Monday thru Friday

I feel your pain. This is easily the dumbest thing to ever happen to turbo tax and is a sure fire reason I will never be using this service again... I have to upgrade my account to access prior returns? Please tell me its a god **bleep** joke. On top of that you don't even make it easy to do so.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for when access to online tax returns expire - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/when-does-access-to-my-prior-year-turbotax-...

You can also get free transcripts of your federal return from the IRS - http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript

For a fee of $50 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

PLUS

When you use a FREE anything there are always limitations ... and not having access to your returns AFTER the end of season is one of them ... your choices are to pay for the PLUS upgrade to keep access  OR   save a PDF of the return  while you still have access to it.   The option to upgrade is offered and explained no less than 3 times as you use the program and you had to decline the update each time ... do not be mad at TT for the decisions you made.  Now upgrading to PLUS is not an option as the online system is changed to the new tax year... this blackout period happens each and every year so all you can do is wait for the system to come back online  OR   get a free transcript from the IRS as mentioned in the other answer.

Note:  Every year, before mid-October, print a copy of your current year tax return and save it as a tax file and pdf, too.  That way you will have it when you need it for school, a loan, next year’s tax return, etc. without going through a lot of aggravation (and expense)  to get it.

just because these are the rules that TT has set up doesn't make them right this is horrible at every angle by all means charge for someone to dig up a file but this is just painful and terrible WHY TT WHYYYYYY

PLUS

Well because those are the rules that TT set up for prior year storage ...  When does access to my prior-year TurboTax Online returns expire?

EVERYONE needs to be an adult and save a paper copy OR PDF of the return for their own records and stop relying on a third party to do it for them.   Before  computers you would keep a paper copy of the return (usually the one you did in pencil before copying the final  info to the forms you would mail in  or  you got a paper copy from the tax preparer you used.  It is no different now ... it is ultimately your responsibility to keep your own income tax records.  The fact that TT has limitations is their prerogative and complaining about it will not change that situation.

Now if your prior year returns are locked you will be able to unlock them sometime this week when the 2019 program goes live ... you will need to start your 2019 program and pay for at least the PLUS version.

PLUS

Seems like they have changed things again ... to access prior year returns you must ONLY REGISTER the 2019 account ... upgrading and paying for PLUS are no longer needed ...

How do I access a prior year return?

You’ll need to register first if you don’t already have access to your prior year returns under Your tax returns & documents as you sign in to TurboTax.

Before starting, make sure you’re using the same TurboTax account (with the same username) as previous years.

To access:

  1. Choose TurboTax Free Edition when starting if you haven't already done so.
  2. Follow the screens and provide some personal info.
  3. When you’ve reached the Personal info summaryscreen, select Continue.
  4. Then, select Filein the left-hand menu (this is just a step in order to register, you won’t actually be filing).
  5. Continue until you get to Review your orderand select Start.
  6. Select View payment options.
  7. Then continue until you get to the registration screen.
  8. Enter your info and select Register, then Continue.
  9. Go to Tax Homein the left-hand menu.
  10. Under Your tax returns & documents, go toDownload/print return (PDF) (select Show if not visible).
