No. The IRS no longer allows that because it was a security risk. You verify your identity when e-filing either by using the same e-file PIN you've always used, or by using the AGI from last year's tax return.
If you believe your e-file PIN is compromised, you can try filing a form 14039 identity theft affidavit. If the IRS accepts the claim, they will issue a more secure 6-digit identity protection PIN for you to use in addition to your 5 digit e-file PIN or AGI.
if you are asking about selecting a new PIN to be used next year, you can invent a new PIN of your choosing. Write it down, because most filers can't find it in TurboTax
How can I change my 5 digit efiling pin?
I e-filed filed my 2020 Federal taxe return. It was rejected. I douple checked my prior year AGI and entered it correctly. I think I saw a question " Did you file a return in 2019. I answered YES! I did file a return But did not file it electronically. HOWEVER I did e-file in 2018 and that pin was populated in Turbotax. So...I used the AGI from 2019 and the pin from 2018 and the correct birthdate and it was rejected. ALSO, this was filed on 02/10/2021. Could the problem be that the IRS was not processing returns til 02/12/2021. Please Help!
What was the rejection code you received? If it was rejected for the AGI not matching, please this TurboTax FAQ: TurboTax Online instructions for E-file reject IND-031-04 or IND-032-04: The AGI or Self-select PIN ....
If it's another rejection code, please see the section: Most "Popular" IRS rejections is this TurboTax FAQ for assistance.
My problem is that i now have a 6 digit pin
Turbo tax wont accept 6 digits - so now what do i do?
@frankdesmond62 A 6-digit pin is an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) assigned by the IRS. Follow the steps below to enter your IP PIN:
Additional Reference: Is my Self-Select PIN the same as my IP PIN?
You state that I can provide my prior year's PIN or AGI but TurboTax seems to always require the PIN to eFile.
When I initially efiled, I provided just the PIN. My return was rejected with error: "IND-031-04 - The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records.". I was then prompted to enter my prior year's AGI, which I did and resubmitted. It was rejected again. I KNOW my AGI is correct as I verified it at irs.gov. I am 99% certain my PIN is also correct as TurboTax prefilled it in for me based on my prior year's return.
How can I resolve this??? I've resubmitted the efile multiple times with this same error.
TurboTax does not support e-File based on self-select PIN, only AGI.
If you were to use other tax software you would be able to use the self-select PIN you selected last year.
If you elect to use other tax software next year you would be able to use the self-select PIN you selected this year using TurboTax.
