My son is 17 years old & in 10th grade & does not work. I claimed him as my dependent on my taxes. He didn’t start Kindergarten until he was almost 6 years old because he has a late birthday plus he repeated Kindergarten.  I should have received a $500 credit for him but did not.  How do I get this money?

@Maxcookiemax - only children under the age of 17 on 12/31/19  are eligible for stimulus.  if you child was born in 2002, there is no stimulus eligibility.

IRS FAQ:

Calculating My Economic Impact Payment

A10. Eligible individuals will receive $1,200. Two eligible individuals filing a joint return will receive $2,400. You will receive an additional $500 Payment for each qualifying child you claimed on your tax return being used to calculate your Payment who meets the following conditions:

  • The child is your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, your grandchild, niece, or nephew).
  • The child is claimed as a dependent on your tax return.
  • The child was under age 17 at the end of the taxable year.
  • The child was a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.
  • The child has a valid SSN or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN)

@NCperson @Do you know how to check the form filed with the non filers portal to be sure it is correct? My husband is a 100% disabled veteran and his disability is the only income we have. We have 3 kids - the younger 2 turned 7 and 3 this month and the oldest is 15. 15 yr old is my step however she lives with us year around except the one month in the summer she is visiting her mom.

We like, so many others only received $2400. I googled a copy of the letter and the number is automated recording. I’m concerned since we don’t normally file taxes that it won’t be corrected by filing taxes next year.

Was a child over 16 on Dec 31, 2019 or turned 17 in 2020?  Has to be UNDER 17 on Dec 31, 2020 (that's right 2020).

You will receive any additional credit to which you were entitled when you file your 2020 taxes.

If the children's mother claimed them as dependents then you were not eligible to receive any payment for them, so your check was correct.  Sounds like their mother's check was wrong but we do not have enough detail to make that determination.  Only the IRS could answer that and they are not open for questions.  Their mother, though, could possibly receive her payment for them next year when she files tax for 2020.

I have 3 dependants and should have received 2,700 and only received 1,200. My fiancé’s money also just did not come at all. This is extremely frustrating  that for a family of 5 we only got 1,200. It seems like nonfilers are the ones being left out of the dependants money and it’s so unfair they are doing absolutely nothing about it! I filled the nonfilers form on April 10th the day the former came out and they said as long as u filled it out on time u will received ur full payment... well clearly that’s not the case!

While millions of Americans have received stimulus checks, some are finding that they’re receiving less than what they were expecting.   https://fox59.com/news/coronavirus/receive-less-stimulus-money-than-you-expected-heres-what-the-irs-says-you-should-do/

The federal government’s stimulus plan provides $1,200 for individual taxpayers plus $500 for each child under the age of 17.

Yet, in many cases, parents received less money than they expected—with the extra $500 for dependents missing.

It’s difficult to get answers because the Internal Revenue Service isn’t taking phone calls or emails about problems with the stimulus program. However, it has been updating the “frequently asked questions” section on its website.

What should you do if you didn’t get the money you were expecting?

According to an IRS FAQ page update from this week, you’ll need to claim the additional money when you file your 2020 tax return.

From the IRS website:

If you did not receive the full amount to which you believe you are entitled, you will be able to claim the additional amount when you file your 2020 tax return.  This is particularly important for individuals who may be entitled to the additional $500 per qualifying child dependent payments. For VA and SSI recipients who don’t have a filing requirement and have a child, they need to use the Non-Filers tool on IRS.gov by May 5 in order to have the $500 added automatically to their $1,200 Economic Impact payment.

For some reason I ONLY got $2900 instead of $3400.!!? When I did my taxes with turbo tax for some reason one of my sons said he wasn't   qualified on my taxes, when I looked after I turned them in with turbo tax when I downloaded the tax return- He has been qualified for the last 3 years and for SOME reason turbo tax put he wasnt qualified this year- then it proved when I got my stimulus check, because I contacted turbo tax when I noticed it and she s me dated both were qualified

It is possible that your payment may still be on its way - not all taxpayers who file jointly have been receiving joint payments.

If yours isn't received in the coming weeks, you can claim it as a credit when you file your taxes in 2021 for tax year 2020.

You may be able to check the status of your payment here: IRS Get my Payment tool.

So, if you are a non-filer, you get nothing.

Because of an issue with TurboTax improperly reporting dependent information? Sounds actionable.

For security reasons, a letter about the Payment will be mailed to each recipient’s last known address within 15 days after the Payment is made. The letter will provide information on how the Payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the Payment.
