IP PIN is 6 digits, TurboTax allows only 5

Just like the subject says, we received a 6 digit IP PIN from the IRS, but TurboTax allows only 5 digits. I keep getting a "IRS Rejected" email when I E-file.

What is the deal?

You may be confused about the PIN it is asking for.  Some people request a special 6 digit PIN from the IRS because they have been --- or fear they will be--victims of identity theft or tax fraud.  They get a special PIN.  It is entered in a different spot on a tax return.

The five digit one is the one you may be used to---that is the one you created for yourself and use each year--or you can change it for yourself if you want to.

The IRS-issued IP PIN and your five-digit signature PIN are two separate numbers. Your PIN is one you create which acts as an electronic signature on your return; the IRS IP PIN is used for identity verification.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  • Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  • Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  • Subtab Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  • Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  • Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  • Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

IP PIN is when the IRS has issued an identity protection additional layer of protection for your return based on a past issue.  There is a separate place to enter that information in the "Other Tax Situations" section.  The standard taxpayer PIN entered at the end of the return process is a self-selected identifier the taxpayer creates themselves.

Correct that IP PIN is six digits, the taxpayer PIN is five.  They are two different things entered in different places of the software.

Thank you all for the responses! I guess I should have noted that I am doing my taxes with the PC software, not online. But I was able to find the fields after all you all's explanation.

It is strange that there was no notification asking if me or my spouse were issued an IP PIN. I had to dig into the forms and enter it in the "Federal Information Worksheet" form, line # - oh great! The one form that the lines are not numbered! It's just under Part VII - State Filing Information.

If using software (not doing thru online account) and after being rejected, you can go back to file and click:

FEDERAL TAXES  -> Other Tax Situations

look for "Other Return Info" section & press START. Go thru the questions and you will need to enter the IP PIN (6 digit) for all listed in the filing if applicable, if only 1 person has IP PIN then only that person IP PIN is entered.

TurboTax still will request the 5 digit personal pin. The IP PIN (6 digits) will be stored separately in section VII.

IP PIN is 6 digits, TurboTax allows only 5

We(Husband and wife) lost our Turbo tax 5 digits pin so that we were not able to do e-file for the last 3 years due to bad pin.   This year we prepared early to get the IPPIN from IRS in advance. After we got the IP PIN, we noticed that it is 6 digits not 5 digits.   If this IRS IP PIN can't work with Turbo tax e-file submission, why does Turbo tax give us the following messages and ask us to get the 6 digits pin from IRS for no good.

IND-183-01 - The Spouse did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number.

These are our questions.

1.I followed the answer and go to "other tax situation" and input out IP PIN from IRS.   Do we still get the "invalid PIN" again when I resubmit my e-file return?  I noticed that the e-file still require me to put turbo tax pin?  Can our correct IP PIN from IRS let the Turbo tax software ignore my bad turbo tax pin and let my e-file go through?

2. If the answer is no for the question 1,  how do I get my turbo tax pin back? In year 2020 , we following the online instruction to reset the pin, it didn't work. It asked mobile phone number and all kind of security questions  which we have changed.

The notice you posted isn't from TurboTax, it's from the IRS and only delivered through the TurboTax program to tell you why your return was rejected by the IRS.

The five digit 'signature pin' that is asked as part of the identification process during the filing steps is self-selected.  It can be any set of five numbers, but you're the one who picks them.  It's not necessary to remember them from year to year, but if you do, they can be used as part of the verification process for next year.  Otherwise, you can use the prior year AGI from your return for that step.

The notice from the IRS relates to something called an Identity Protection PIN - which means there was a past issue with potential identity issues at the IRS.  That is a six digit number that will come via a letter each year in December or early January.  The rejection notice below says the number entered for the spouse on the return was not correct.  You can go to the IRS web site to verify the IP PIN at:  www.irs.gov/genanippin

There are many people explained the difference between the IRS issued IP PIN (6 digits) and the personal PIN you select (5 digits) in TurboTax.  As long as you have the personal PIN chosen, you need to make sure your IP PIN (6 digits) is entered correctly in TurboTax.  I had the exact same rejection after e-file my fed and state tax after submitted from my TurboTax on Mac.

The fix is to locate the place where to enter the IP PIN in TurboTax.  It is not where you enter the 5-digit person PIN for you (and your spouse, if married).  The easilest way I found is:

1. Launch TurboTax (your desktop version).

2. While your Turbotax file is open, click on "Search Topics" on the top ribbon bar.

3. In "I'm looking for" field, enter "IP PIN".  Click "OK" button to proceed.

4. It takes you to Identity Protection PIN section, under "Other Tax Situations".

5. Under the question "What if my letter says it's for my 2014 taxes?", choose "Yes, at least one of us got an IP PIN."

6. In my case, I only enter my own IP PIN (6-digits) and continue.  Of course, if you file jointly, you can enter both your and your spouse's IP PINs.

7. Jump straight to "File" and proceed on all the steps for e-file.

8.  After e-file, it shows pending on fed and state taxes.  After about 30 minutes, I received a message that my fed tax has been accepted!

It ONLY took me about 3 hours from the first rejection to my final resolution I described above.

The answer is not true.  I used the PIN that I have used previously and my filing was rejected.

The PIN from the IRS cannot be entered into the Turbo Tax forms....

I am blocked from submitting my forms.

@despenla

You are wrong...read the thread above your post that clearly tells you where to enter the 6 digit  IP PIN.  You also need to enter a 5 digit pin in the file tab to e-sign the return.

Your instructions seem to be for the online version. The downloaded version works otherwise.

TT Home & Business fails to resolve this.  Even editing the form manually results in a Federal rejection.

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

No, I am not confused about the IP PIN.  Last year my return was rejected by the IRS,  I had to  get the IP PIN to successfully get my return accepted.  Also the instructions said that I had to get a new IP PIN each year.

Yes I was hacked, I got the 5071C letter from the IRS and I had to endure numerous unpleasant push ups proving my identity to the IRS.  So I really need to be able to verify that turbo tax is going to send a 6 digit IP PIN to the IRS so I get my taxes filed.
