Why am I being charged for TurboTax Premier?

If you have any of the forms below, they are not covered under the Free Edition or Deluxe. TurboTax will prompt you to upgrade.

Form 1099-B Proceeds from Broker Transactions
Form 2210-F Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Farmers and Fishermen
Form 2439 Notice to Shareholder of Undistributed Long-Term Capital Gains
Form 3468 Investment Credit
Form 3800 General Business Credit
Form 4136 Credit for Federal Tax Paid on Fuels
Form 4255 Recapture of Investment Credit
Form 4797 Sales of Business Property
Form 4835 Farm Rental Income and Expenses
Form 6198 At-Risk Limitations
Form 6252 Installment Sale Income
Form 6781 Gains/Losses from Section 1256 Contracts and Straddles
Form 8586 Low-Income Housing Credit
Form 8824 Like-Kind Exchange
Form 8949 Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets
Schedules K-1 (Form 1041) Estates and Trusts
Schedules K-1 (Form 1065) Partner's Share of Income, Credits, Deductions
Schedules K-1 (Form 1120S) Shareholder's Share of Income, Credits, etc

If none of this applies to you, you can use the clear and start over feature.

Note: In TurboTax Online, you can erase your return and start from scratch as long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered.

Please see the FAQs below for more information.

We don't know what product you are using and what kinds of income you have, and what you are being charged for.  In the absence of any information, all I can do is tell you about the 2 free products.

TurboTax has 2 free products   I'll tell you about both free products below.

If you haven't already paid, you may be able to change editions.   Read this whole answer carefully first before making a decision.

The regular Free Edition is for very simple returns and not everyone can use it.  Certain forms are not available in Free Edition and require an upgrade to Deluxe or Premier or higher, such as one of Schedules 1-3, itemized deductions, education credits, student loan interest, retirement savers credit, etc.   Did you start in Free Edition and had to upgrade?      See this FAQ on some situations where one cannot use Free Edition:

FAQ:  Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition?

If you have a very simple return, don't need Schedules 1-3, and are sure you don't otherwise need Deluxe or Premier, here's how to start over and choose regular Free Edition:

The other free product (TurboTax IRS Free File Program) is fully-featured and can prepare all the usual forms and schedules.  It is even more powerful than Deluxe or Premier, if you qualify.  For example, in addition to Schedules 1-3 it can prepare Schedules C, D, E, F, etc., and enter K-1. But you have to meet one of the qualifications to use.  See below:

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns through the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax, you just need to meet one of these requirements:

      • Your 2019 AGI is $36,000 or less (for Married Filing Jointly returns, combined AGI of both spouses cannot be over that limit),  or
      • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
      • In 2019, you served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum AGI of $69,000, and you have a military-issued W-2.

If you qualify for that program and want to use it, see these 2 FAQs:

Why am I being charged for TurboTax Premier?

I'm a little lost so if I want max credit back 8 have to pay more. Otherwise the form that needs to be filed for low income credit is under premium . That sounds like turbo tax is taking advantage of those with a lower income . Basically I won't really get that credit since I must pay more. It's fine I get your excuse for file extra paperwork to the IRS . I just think turbo tax is false advertising to the community that can't afford to pay in the first place.

Thank you

What credit are you trying to claim?   Or what are you entering that is prompting you to upgrade to TurboTax Premier?  @farqm

@farqm We are at a disadvantage since you are posting in a thread that has posts from multiple users already.  We cannot tell what software you are using---it does not show up here.

But I am going to take a wild guess and  ask if you started out in Free Edition and entered some retirement that was deducted from your W-2 that is giving you the retirement savers credit.   If that is what is happening, You can clear it and start over,

then  you can tell the software that you are a student.  Students are not eligible for that credit, so you will get out of the upgrade to a paid version of the software --- you will of course, not get that little credit. can use one of the other software programs on the IRS site to file for free

Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site
