The workaround works, but this is a serious bug and should be easy to fix. The message was in January 2025 and there have been multiple updates. Does no one at Intuit know how to change a 5-digit input field to a 6-digit input field??
If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button
Go back to Turbo Tax Other Tax Situations
You see other Return info.
Identity protection PIN ( Update)
Hope this helps you
Have a great day
Don’t go to form mode to enter your pin it won’t take 6 digits. You have to use Turbo Tax software
go to FEDERAL TAXES. (Other Tax Situations)
you see (other Return Info ). Update ( identify Protection PIN)
hope this helps
I have my wife's IP PIN 6 digits number, but do not see where to enter it
The 6-digit Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is different from the 5-digit e-filing PIN, and is entered in a different place. Here's how to enter your IP PIN in TurboTax if you are e-filing.
For security, TurboTax does not show the IP PIN on the printed copy of your return.
I entered the 6 digits IP PIN number, but it is still asking me for the 5 digit personal code and won't proceed
I entered the 6 digits IP PIN number, but Turbo Tax still takes me back to the screen where it is asking me to enter the personal pin number. I try to bypass it by leaving it blank, but it won't let me move on.
5 digit self selected pin

On the "signature" screen that asks for a 5-digit PIN, you can use any 5 digits of your choosing (and the screen should say that) except it can't be all zeros. Some people use the same 5-digit PIN year after year, but it's not necessary for that signature screen. A lot of people probably don't even save it. You can create a new 5-digit PIN every year, if you wish.
