You don't need to tell Turbo Tax.  The IRS knows.  Did you make a payment with the extension?

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments and change it to zero.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

Since today is 10/18 that really is a mute subject...  but if you made a payment with the extension make sure you enter it here :

To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • On Income Taxes Paid, click on the start or update button

On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button

Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment

The federal extension payment will be shown on Schedule 3 Line 10. The amount from Schedule 3 Part II Line 15 flows to Form 1040 Line 31.

You cannot e-file a 2021 tax return after October 17, 2022 unless the e-filed return was sent on or before the due date and rejected by the IRS.  The tax return can only be printed and mailed.

See this for printing a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/print-mail-return-turb...

If you paid any taxes with the extension you will need to report the payment on your 2021 tax return.

Efile thru TT  remains open until 11/17/22 for all returns however if you have a balance due it will be considered late filing.

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-reminds-taxpayers-of-upcoming-filing-extension-deadline-free-file-r...

For those who timely filed by midnight 10/17 and are REJECTED you have 5 days (up until 10/22/23) to correct the error and resubmit the return to be considered timely filed.    NEW filings will be allowed thru the TT system until the IRS shut down on 11/17/22 however they are considered late .  After that they will have to be mailed in.

END OF YEAR STEPS FOR ONLINE USERS
E-file servers are shut down for the year for personal returns. No exceptions!   You won't be able to work on your return or get a copy of it after November 17.

If you have already filed your return I would double check that both federal and state were accepted here,
https://shop.turbotax.intuit.com/efile/efile_status_lookup.jsp

If you haven't filed or finished yet you only have until Nov  17 to finish and efile.   If you efile by Nov 17  you should still save and print out the pdf file ASAP  so you can mail it in case your efile gets rejected and you are not able to get it to go through.

If you don't efile by Nov 17 you will have to print and mail it.  If you don't finish your return you will have to switch to the Desktop program.  So you might want to switch NOW.  To switch from online to desktop and continue in the desktop version see this…….

You can buy a cd or download the program here https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download
or look around at stores for sales.   Or if you already paid for the Online version you can call in and ask if they will switch you over.  Contact Customer Service  https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number?jump_to=answer_3300041

BEFORE Nov 17
Either way if you have already filed or not filed you should save both the .tax file and the pdf file to your computer so you will always have access to it.  You might need to amend it or need a copy to get a loan, etc.

AFTER Nov 17
October 22, 2022 is the Final deadline to resubmit a rejected return that was originally e-filed on or before October 17.  If you're expecting a refund and miss the November 17th  final cutoff date, you have until April 15, 2025 (October 15, 2025 if you filed an extension) to file a paper return and claim your 2021 refund.
