How do I open my sister's 2020 1040 tax file from her Turbo Tax Deluxe app in my Turbo Tax Deluxe app on my PC?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
if your user account is as an administrator try the following
Run as Administrator: Since the error code may indicate a permissions issue, try running the app as an administrator by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting RAA
Check Windows Temporary Folder Permissions: Follow these steps:
Using the view link at the very top of most folders select to show hidden files - appdata is a hidden folder
Find the Temp folder inside C:\Users\User\AppData\Local.
Right-click on it, select “Properties,” go to the “Security” tab, and ensure that your username has “Full Control” checked. Save the settings
if this doesn't work the other options are to reinstall, after uninstalling and rebooting, the app (can cause license issue problems) or contact support.
You must be using the TurboTax 2020 desktop software to open a 2020 tax data file.
If your sister used the TurboTax online editions for the 2020 tax return, you will need to access her online account and down load the 2020 tax data file.
A 2020 tax data file will have a file extension of .tax2020
To open the 2020 tax data file with the 2020 TurboTax software, click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen. Click on Open Tax Return the Browse to the location where the 2020 tax data file as been downloaded and stored.
My typo -- her tax file is 2023 and so is mine. but her file is blocked from opening on my PC, which recognizes the file, posts an Error 106, and lets me choose between Download State File and Cancel. Neither is helpful. I've tried logging intò the app with her user name and password, and have tried renaming the file. Don't know what else to try.
Cannot find a reference to error 106 in TurboTax. Have found the error in a Quickbooks account.
Does her tax return have a state tax return that is not included in your 2023 TurboTax program? Or do you both use the same state program to complete a state tax return?

Error 106 can mean a couple things:
- If the return was online then it could mean a network interruption.
- If the return was on the disk drive then check the file permissions. In windows error 106 can mean does not have Admin authority.
Do you have her file ending in .tax2023? You might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program. Go up to File-New Tax Return and start a fake return then click on the State tab to download the state.
Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.
See this article on how to move your tax return to another computer…….
What app did you try logging into? Did she use the Online version? Does her file end in .tax2023 or something else?
We both, independently, downloaded TT Deluxe 2023 Fed File + 1 state file. She reports that the file she send me includes the downloaded state file, not the same state that I downloaded with my TT fed file.
She and I both (independently) downloaded TT Deluxe 2023 1040 Fed + 1 State. We have both subsequently completed the desktop Fed file and downloaded our respective state files, populated from the fed files. While you and others (and I thank you all!) were considering and responding, I was on the phone with three agents (not simultaneously) of Turbotax support -- with a fourth, higher level agent hovering for the last hour. Before the third call was ended (not by me), the dancing cursor manipulated by the adviser I couldn't hear had led me to the "open new return" route you suggested, but then changed his mind. I don't know why. Thank you for the Transfer Tax File reference; we've been doing this successfully for the past ten years, without glitches severe enough to recall. From today's outing, I do have an email summary of the first (failed) attempt that at least provides a case file number, although it declares the case resolved and closed. I'll try some more tomorrow
Then sorry. You will have to buy and download the program for her state before you can open her return. You have to start a new fake return. Put in an address for her state then go to the state tab and download that state. It should make you pay $45.
Thanks and see my response below to Volvo Girl.
What happened to that other long post you made about talking to support? It must have been deleted. You said you've done this in years before? Was there always a different state in her file?
I hit "Best Reply" by mistake. Sorry. Before I saw your reply, I had jumped to your closing alternative and called Support. HOURS!!!!!!! later the problem is unsolved and up for another try tomorrow. Please see my reply to Volvo Girl below for more.
There has always been a (same) different state.
I would copy and include the TT summary, but it was bull**bleep**, which is why the call continued for another hour and more. It was in the second hour that he led me to the Open New File, but did not continue. and the agent with whom I was on the phone said enough that I understood he was going toward what you suggested, but then he did not continue. Maybe he was consulting with others -- I have no idea -- but a quarter of an hour later, when I broke silence on the phone, there was no one there.
Here's what we did this morning: my sister deleted the state file from her TT return, saved the return, successfully opened the return WITHOUT the state file, and forwarded it to me.
I successfully opened the return WITHOUT the state file, which is entirely sufficient for my review, and that concludes this tortured tale.
There is a PS: my sister installed the state file in the new return, successfully opened it with populated entries in the state file, and forwarded it to me. I again opened to a repeat of yesterday, with a frozen file and a dialog box calling for a state file download -- and went to Task Manager to end the task.
I've had more than enough,
