Hello-
Rushing to get my small business and rental property 1040 filed by midnight tonight. I am expecting a modest refund. I made an additional estimated tax payment with my extension on April 15 just to be sure.
Will I be able to e-file my 1040 via turbotax windows 10 - home and business version - after midnight tonight Oct 15 (since my taxes won't be considered late by IRS with a refund due)? I remember a prior year when I tried to e-file in late October and it wouldn't let me saying efile had closed for the season. But my research seems to indicate I have a week or so past the October 15 e-file/extension deadline to actually e-file through turbotax - and along to the IRS.
Can I rely on this?
my returns are complicated for an individual and I'd prefer to have a little more time rather than rush to get them e-filed by midnight if I don't have to (if turbotax will still transmit my e-filed 2024 return in a day or two more). AND I REALLY REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO PAPER FILE.
thanks for any info you may have on this!

E-filing will close at midnight in your time zone on October 15. If you miss that deadline, you will need to file your return by mail. Rejected e-files get a few extra days (five, I think) to be fixed and re-filed.
thanks - do you think this post down below is not correct? (And to be clear I'm not talking federal deadline - I"m talking when turbotax servers won't accept/allow an efiled return).
quote from that discussion-..."Yes, if you missed the October 15 tax extension deadline, you have until October 31 to file your return online in TurboTax, but it may be subject to late filing fees.
After October 31, you can't start, finish, or e-file new returns in TurboTax Online. You'll need to use TurboTax Desktop and mail your return."
That takes me by surprise, but looks like good news for you if you need some extra time.
@virginia-turbotax-deluxe-user …….my returns are complicated for an individual and I'd prefer to have a little more time rather than rush to get them e-filed by midnight
Rush? You’ve had 6 months after the April 15 due date.
Well bless your heart! You must have a very orderly life. with no surprises allowed. Many do not.
There may well be a very good reason for getting an extension. There definitely was in Tennessee and North Carolina this year. Even the IRS deadline was extended until early November. So, Turbotax does not have the flexibility to deal with extending their e-filing deadline to match the IRS deadline? That isthr disappointing,
Especially as the return I submitted, attempted to correct using Turbotax guidance and resubmitted multiple times was just rejected again.
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.
What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2023 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
well, I take the time that is allowed - but can't miss the e-fle deadline. I've had a bit of a challenging year+, losing my dear father after his battle with dementia and being tasked with sorting out his estate, and have one too many responsibilities it seems- helping my senior mom and my young adult kids and being self employed with a job that's always on.
but thanks for your helpful advice.
